Memorial day weekend is a big planting weekend here, they do get out the early stuff earlier though.
Most of the plants I've started for extra protein for the chickens has started. Except the winter squash which will go in when the ground is warm.

How are you this morning?

Morning Abi.
Good morning all. I am (finally)hatching out eggs! 9 so far. My silkie is too and she has 3 that I have seen
Thanks, MC! You always make my day!
SO lovely!
Quote: Yup - I use these for unpredictable roosters as well - You can get them relatively cheaply at Tractor Supply.
The older "pet" Cream Legbar family coop goes to roost early because one of the hens is nearly blind (they all go tor roost early with her). That means that the rooster, Dumbledore, is there on the roost early enough that I have to be careful when collecting eggs late. He is very protective, and seems to think that a predator is trying to get in through the little egg door, and comes flying off the roost to attack. I have a scar on my lip from where he stuck his head out of the little door to nail me and my face was too close, and last night I got a nasty bite on the hand. I may need to start using gloves to collect their eggs.
(He's not being unreasonable - raccoons have tried to get into the coop through that door at night. Fortunately, they don't have the combination to the lock.)![]()

Quote: Yeah - even here in south Texas I have to be sure not to plant watermelons too early. A small, early, quick maturing one should do well, though.
That' amazing and wonderful!!!!! Is the chick doing ok?
That's a great variety!
Quote: A lot of my pastes get blossom end rot as well - have you tried putting a small handful of epsom salts in the hole when you transplant them in the ground? Works for me. If you forget you can side dress and water it in, but the handful in the hole is better.
SO glad you rescued them - that storm rolled through here this morning. Glad the geese and ducks are doing well!@DwayneNLiz @Fire Ant Farm @BantyChooks @Sally Sunshine
We had a horrible thunderstorm last night, I had to send my husband out at like 4am in the morning to rescue the two new baby goats. Mom just left them in a mud puddle, and I was worried she'd do that. So we brought them inside for the night until the rain stopped. They are happy with mom again.
The sebastapol geese and 4 ducklings.
Hubby's not going to butcher our drakes. He doesn't want to bother with them, so he suggested just shooting them :/
My broody in a dog kennel. She finally made herself a nest in the back.
I woke up this morning to my phone telling me severe heavy rain was coming in 2 minutes - so I got up to go feed and water the chicks in the brooders. Then I went ahead and cleaned all the brooders out. That took until the rain stopped, and then I went to check on the chicks I moved outside last night - they are just fine, as expected. (See how badly I have to mow?! And all is too wet!)
I still need to weigh the Aloha Naked Necks, but I had not had any coffee or breakfast, so I took a break. But now I'm fed, caffeinated, and caught up on BYC, so I need to got get those weights and photos.
Oh, and Opal says hi. She has taken possession of the couch and claimed it as her own.

What did you end up planting for the chickens?
The poppy color was really good Excited about the Dark Cornish hope they hatch well. The batch from the feed store was a flop. Was going to put them and the NN together but that never happened due to the variety I received. Oh and my two cats say hi to Opal. They were both looking at me when I went to take this shot yesterday it was a perfect mirroring of each other. However the skittish one quickly bolted. Head turned in this shot and gone in the next. Thanks, MC! You always make my day!![]()

That's what happened for me and the New Hampshires - I bailed on cross plans with the hatchery stock I got, and waited to get good breeder German New Hampshires to do the cross.Excited about the Dark Cornish hope they hatch well. The batch from the feed store was a flop. Was going to put them and the NN together but that never happened due to the variety I received.
