EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Woke up with a dead/painful hand again this morning, so I'm up early. I blame trying to learn to use the belt sander yesterday. Taking the day off again today, hoping get more building done today (yesterday ended up being filled with chicken chores and doctors appointment). Also hoping to have lunch with Kajira.

I have 4 chicks that I just cleaned up with pasty butt. 3 are a few days old, one is a silkie chick that's about 3 weeks old. Any suggestions for prevention?

I guess my question to actual "educational hatching" must be a no. I can't even find it anymore.

Help please!

My lone surviving turkey egg has pipped and started to zip, but hasn't made any progress in several hours. Membrane looks tan. Should I try to moisten? Other chicken chick has hatched, and other chicken chick has a pip. Tomorrow is day 28.

@AnneInTheBurbs dont you get tag notifications in email? sorry I should have found you!

@mlm Mike @daxigait and who else has kept goats forever?

I had the farrier out to look at Beaux's hooves and try to shape them up for me. He worked on it a but but said he's never seen anything quite like it. He said Beaux is walking on the balls (?) of his hooves and stands like a horse does when it has foundered. His back hooves are the worst. I took more pics today, hoping we can get some suggestions? He said he's going to do some research, and that he'll try anything that is suggested. He didn't charge me for the trim.

Both back hooves.

I think you just need to keep working with them and trim or file often to get them back, I trim at least every six weeks, have you trimmed them yet? I think foot soaking helps and or after a long rain. Some people actually put roofing shingles on an incline so it helps keep their hooves in shape, if you grind file or trim if your getting to pink stop and try again each week. from what I know about foundered goat hooves is that its genetic and should not be bred too. It can be extremely painful for the goats. @campingshaws

@SallySunshine I could have still gotten them, but I felt like I had waited long enough. The temp is starting to soar here (creeping towards the 90s) and I hate incubating in the heat. It makes it nearly impossible for me to keep the temp right. I might do it when I get an a.c. in the back of the house where I hatch, but until then I won't risk it. Besides, my hatches have lined up so perfectly. I kicked the test hatch chicks out the day my EHAL chicks started hatching and once this batch hatches I'll be able to kick out the EHAL chicks.
yes you waited plenty, I am so glad I didnt order, I would be furious! on the rare breed auction on FB I seen some chicks listed. cute too.

Quote: Thank you, I helped it out but it has some green stuff on his butt. Should I give him a rinse?

how are his feet?

My magpie duckling seems to be having trouble hatching. Pipped fine. But instead of unzippping in a circle around the AC she made a big hole in the middle. She is trying to push out butdoesn't seem to be able to. membrane seems to trap her a little.
update?

Any further word from CH about his momma being taken to the hospital?
IDK I pray she is ok!

I have veins in quail eggs, pulled turkey eggs none developed, but they were fertile, set 24 barnyard mix. Picking up BLRW chicks Thursday. By the end of the month I should be getting more black copper marans eggs.

She truly was a very beautiful girl. I am sorry after all your efforts you lost anyway. That just sucks.

I'm so sorry, Sally; I hurt for you. I've had to put a few down, but never lost one at home except a 6-8 wk old litter to misdiagnosed (by the vet) Parvo. Your Sophia is in a better place today, and her suffering is over.
Hang in there Hon, time will help the hurt go away. And you're right; she was indeed a beautiful dog.

thanks whites

Sweet Sally, Very sorry for this. I've been lucky in that of all my dogs only 3 have been seizure prone. Two were maintained with meds, and the third a puppy had only 1 massive seizure that he died from almost immediately. Just stopped by to say, "Hi " and saw of your loss.
