My original post said about all I know about it. Near as I can tell, the arches were part of the original house construction plans. They were lined with stone, which, when heated by the burning/smoldering logs, heated the house above. I want to say it was an article I read in Mother Earth News, maybe in the early-mid 70's, but don't take that to the bank.

If the fan don't get him, the heat should. Slapping the hood a couple times before you get in might help; might run him out.
