EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I need help with what to do next on an assisted hatch. I have goslings on day 31 and was told that I should start an assisted hatch bc it was beyond wait time and I thought it was internally pipped (turns out I was just seeing movement, but it wasn't actually pipped). I started to assist in the hatch and realized that it had not internally pipped yet (this was last night when I started the assist). As of now it is in the incubator wrapped in a wet paper towel, I do not believe it has finished absorbing everything, so I'm wondering what my next step is or if there's anything to do so I dont lose this baby. It is still alive, im just a wreck over this. I have attached a pic so you can see hopefully whats going on. I cant tell the position of the gosling either. Please help!!

This what I found about hatching geese. When I hatched them they took 35 days.

"Incubation Duration. Incubating goose eggs should be done for a period of about 28 days for smaller breeds, and up to 35 days for larger breeds before pipping begins. Once goose eggs begin hatching, the process can take up to three days before they are completely out of their shell."

Keep the membrane moist. Keep an eye out for vessels in the membrane. If there are still visable vessels it is not ready. It may not be ready to hatch for several more days. If the membrane sticks to the chick (which is quite possible) you may be forced to help it.
If you have an egg shell I would place it over the hole and put a wet paper towel on top.
Problem is each time you open the bator you Increase the chances of shrink wrapping the chicks.

I honestly think that many many many more chicks are killed by premature "assisted" hatching than are saved by assisting.

Eggs have been hatching without help for millions of years....

@Phage
they look so much more breakable than a ball of fluff
do you still have them?

These were hatched for Kev, and I believe he stil has them.

And to answer Kirsten's question my old avatar was from purchased eggs. They were nn x cemani from the time before Greenfire got cemani and they got all trendy. Ended up giving the nn chicks to Kev.

I believe one of those nn chicks were bred into scaleless and produced the black scaleless chick posted earlier.

Take turns watching for Mr. Bear

Nope

Darn. Sorry about that bear. I hope you find a solution.

@Fire Ant Farm I have missed a few days due to forgetting, but I like the challenge so far. I have resorted to setting an alarm to remind me. It has been interesting to me what muscles it is making me most aware of.
thanks

Ditto to what phage said, great advice

She breeds Naked Necks, but the genes are totally different (for Naked Necks, the gene, Na, is dominant, and just affects the feathers on the neck and part of the body). The gene that causes this is called "scaleless" or sc (because they have no follicles and no scales on their legs) - it is recessive. She has a number of carriers in her flock. But you can have regular fully feathered chickens carrying the scaleless gene - so it's a coincidence.

She likes them. Some folks really like them or think they're super cute. I think it's interesting to see how the body is configured under all the feathers, but with no feathers for insulation, they need protection from both heat and cold, and she makes clothes for them and protects them from weather. Not my cup of tea - I won't even get silkies or frizzles because they don't have normal feathers. I want my chickens hardy.

Yeah, it needs clothes. The photos are hysterical, though - Kassaundra tried to make a "maternity dress" so one of them could successfully go broody. Quite the fashion statement!!!

Sorry - but it's in my yard, not yours!!! If it helps, when I get my migraines, they usually manifest with super sensitivity to all noise as well as visual stimulation - not painful, per se, just makes me want to climb the walls...

Didn't you previously have one of Kev's Fm scaleless chicks as your avatar? (You help hatch for him sometimes, right?) If anyone ever doubted the chicken's relation to dinosaurs, it is no mystery now. (Heck, my naked necks look like velociraptors if I don't feed them promptly enough!)
I completely understand!!!! :hugs Hope your family is understanding - one benefit I have from living alone is that I can have the house silent very easily if I want.

Banti, I immediately thought, this would make a GREAT Handyman's Corner on The Red Green Show!!!! :lau

Careful - you can get trichinosis (bear is the most common source in the US now that commercial pork in the US doesn't carry it).

They look excellent!!! I've been happy with my Blue and Black Copper Marans girls, and Monkey (the splash boy) has been good. But, even though I thought I'd really like the blue, int eh end, I find the black girl to be gorgeous. :love

:hugs
Hope you get him tonight...

That's AWESOME!!! Thanks for posting - virtual fishing me me.

Thanks - I think I'll try it once things settle down and I get the chicks out (I'm too disorganized to stick to anything right now).

Good to see you, Linda!!!! :frow

Got more done today, but still more to go (it seems to be never ending). Stopped around 8:30 so that I wouldn't end up with bad wrists in the morning - went shopping for emergency supplies instead (it's our tax holiday weekend). Stocked up on batteries, got replacement smoke and CO alarms (I really need new ones:oops: ), a new fire extinguisher, and a hatchet and an ax. All tax free! (I got my electric/solar generators a couple years ago on the same tax holiday - since they were pricey, I ended up saving a decent chunk, and I have LOVED having them - not only was I able to use during incubation when the power was out, but I can haul them easily by hand all over the yard and plug stuff into them.)

They are neat looking and I can see the dinosaur
I knew there were more reasons I don't eat bear
And that's neat that they have a tax free time for you- were always sales taxless lol

so neat

Oh and my husband saw 4 ducks so only lost the drake
And I counted all the birds roosting and there were 9 so I lost 4 (2 of which were my only roosters)

You just know he got swamped with calls. Heck, I'd sell him an egg for half what he's offering, and deliver it, even.
Too bad false advertising laws wouldn't come into play, or would they?
Hmmm......interesting thought. Wonder how long it would take me to get to Dothan & back; wouldn't want to miss the Orioles' game @ 1PM

Bummer.
