EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

SO FRUSTRATED. I am sure that it is the coccidia now. Just lost 5 more chicks today and counting. NONE of the places around me have corid for medicine. I am going to loose my whole flock at this rate before I can order some in, I already lost a third. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT CAN HELP PLEASE. I hate this crap.

Treat them ASAP with amperolium.

I don't know about this. What is coccidia? Is it contagious as in If one bird has it another around it catches it?

I found a cool spider!

Be carful! It seems to me like a black widow! It has some warning coloration!

I need to look it up. Wondering if it's a golden orb male? I've seen the females in the same area, and there was a female web close by. Maybe he's trying to attract a mate. Or maybe I'm making things up!

Did you get them off the straw? Clean, dry bedding ASAP. Pine shavings are best at this age, I find. Increase heat to 80 degrees to make sure they are warm. Put a bit of apple cider vinegar in the water. Wet their feed with plain water and mix in a bit of honey. Then cross your fingers while you order corid powder on two-day shipping, or overnight.

Post on local farm pages and see if any had some. I gave a dose to a girl nearby when she was treating for the first time and couldn't find any. It's at TSC in the cattle section.

It is a parasite that enter to the digestive truct by eating its oocyte = one of the parasite stages, and it make a mass from the intestinal lining making its bleeding and killing the host in the process. It infects almost all the farm animal and it is one of the biggest killers of farm animsl, especially the young ones.
Do your reaserch it is better to be prepared!

Ah, yes, Pheasant. That makes more sense (too big for a quail).

Getting stuff done, bit by bit, but it's been 97F for several hours now and I'm working outside. (Birds are hunkered down dug into the litter, sprayed some of them with the hose a bit - which they like.) Time for a break. I think I'll go get some hard cider - that sounds REALLY refreshing right about now...
