EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Don't like silkies much either. Only reason I keep mine is he's the best cockbird in terms of temperament and bravery that I have yet owned.
I love the little dudes. They are so good with my kids, and sweet. my roosters are gentle even when they posture with each other and no one gets hurt. they are very nice birds.

He can't see to attack you or run from predators.

He's hatchery stock, so has no crest. Amazingly smart for a silkie -- all the rest were dumb bunnies. He keeps cockerels from waging war on each other and overbreeding willing hens. He's also great for warning about hawks, dogs, and blue jays. :lau

Sweet? Really? My silkies have almost all been terrified of humans because they couldn't see anything.

My kids handled them daily as chicks. They just sit patiently and wait until you pick them up. Sometimes they come up to you and ask to be held. They also would ride my goats/pig around their little area. They don't peck, or kick. Even my big rooster I left with my girls, he sometimes postures, but all it takes is picking him up and he relaxes into your arms and puts his head against you and submits. unlike my other roosters who will run from you so you can't pick them up, he allows it.

Edited to add : All my birds will tolerate being held and don't hurt the kids. Some just like it more than others, and some really hate it and only do it if you force them. haha

I do have to say, however, that he doesn't scream the 'run' command when there are just blue jays. He just trills a warning for the hens to be ready. So I suppose it's unfair to say he doesn't know the difference between a hawk and a blue jay.
