EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

It's been so wet here the chickens don't even want to come out.

Thanks for the condolences Banty and Sally. Yeah, it's a bite but not much you can do except dig holes and hang on for dear life. Hopefully when this runs it's course I'll be left with enough resistant birds to hatch resistant chicks from. Time will tell. I won't give up, just changing course.
I've posted on the other thread, but for what it's worth, having done a lot of reading on this because of my situation - Mareks (if that is indeed what is happening) is not carried in the egg. If you have it on the property, then there will be maternal antibody in the egg that is somewhat protective to the chick. (I've also read to brood them separately for at least 6 weeks indoors, changing clothes/washing hair, etc., after being out with outside birds before coming in to tend chicks. Not sure how long that antibody lasts, but it could protect them if there's a lapse in that separation.) It sounds like you have a pretty virulent strain of whatever it is - breeding for resistance is sometimes all that you are left with. It's tough, though.

(You definitely need to confirm what's going on before making any assumptions, esp. as this is such a major hit for you. @ChickenCanoe has experience with the different ways to get a necropsy in Missouri and may be able to advise you in more detail on top of what you've already researched.)
"Noah, I want you to build an ark. Build it 40 cubits x 80 cubits x 100 cubits" . "How long can you tread water"?

"Riiiight. What's a cubit?"

Morning all,

Sorry to hear about the flooding. The river here appears to have crested last night with only minor flooding. Still early enough farmers that had planted fields can get a 2nd crop planted if need be. Have more rain on the way so we will see how it goes.

Looks like I might have missed the mark on this round but next time you have to bend conduit try filling it with sand. Saw that mentioned on here back awhile ago and it works pretty good to keep it from kinking.

In other news I'm trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up.

In all actuallity I'm trying to see if retiring at 39 is a realistic possibility. It seems as though majority of military that retire pursue some form of second job but I think with a slightly modified lifestyle we could make it work.

Wait who am I kidding I would still be working it would just be my farm, and my land.

On the topic of rotational grazing. Anybody familiar with Joel Salatin and his process. Spent some time this weekend watching youtube videos of his farm and methods along with Justin Rhodes and his farm tour. I think that lifestyle is well within my reach but haven't convinced the wife of it yet.
That's a SUPER idea - I'm totally going to try that. I'll let you know how it goes. (Wet sand?)

Just to ask a ramnom question, has this happend to you: Your giving affection to a Chick/chciken/duck/whatever fowl you might have and it wants down, so it put's something on you?

Don't let em fool you. ALL ticks can cause Lyme disease from one extent to another and what I mean by that is that they are finding Lyme in other species of ticks. Along with Lyme they can carry a long list of co-infections that can ruin your day and your life for that matter. Trust me. Treat all ticks as if they can infect you with Lyme. Most doctors now recommend a 10 day to 2 week course of Doxycycline or Minocycline if you are bitten by any tick just to cover you from potential infections.

I was infected with Lyme in 2009 and diagnosed in 2010. You don't want to go through what I've been through. Make Deep Woods Off your spring and summer fragrance and apply it liberally. Keep mowed paths and yards cut short and take care not to walk though thick undergrowth where ticks can brush off on you.

Be safe.

Fire Ant Farm, I just got off the phone with one of the doctors down at Mizzou's animal lab and have things rolling so I know what to do when the next bird goes feet up on me. I am going for a necopsy and it will cost probably around 70 dollars if I don't do cultures. Not bad really. We also had a talk about breeding resistance in chickens for Mareks and as he said. By the time you know if they are resistant or not, they are no longer laying fertile eggs.

This has been a painful lesson for a chicken flock owner who loves her birds and is watching them slowly die. Buy Vaccinated chicks. I thought I had done a lot of research before I bought my chicks but I was too naive and didn't do enough. If I had it to do over again, I sure enough would have opted from lesser quality birds over higher quality non vaccinated chicks if it meant sparing me this pain and guilt.

@Fire Ant Farm

To the best of my understanding the sand doesn't have to be wet. The sand simply provides resistance and something to push against as opposed to just crushing the conduit. As the tube bends the sand inside reshapes to the bend. I think it was around the time we were disucssing options for the processing hangars for Sally.
