EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I forgot I posted that I was pee-ed off because my competition on Craigslist lowered their prices by $5 when I posted my ad. they undersell me and they do it all the time. I read the ads on Craigslist and tried to match the average prices. but as soon as I post my ad, A day later I look at the ads posted previously and I read and they all dropped $5. we have so much competition in our area it's crazy. And also with the pigs, when we started there wasn't as much competition but now that anyone can buy a boar cheap everybody is breeding and the market is flooded with pigs driving the prices Rock Bottom making it impossible to profit off a litter of pigs anymore.
We only break even if we are lucky. The only perk would be considered the fresh meat supply in our freezers.

Competition can work for or against you. I had 2 big hatches in March. Each time the chicks sold out in less than 2 days. In April - May there was a glut of cheap backyard mix chicks on CL and the feed stores also sold inexpensive hatchery chicks. I sold very few as chicks and ended up selling many as started pullets later in the summer. (Basically when all the people who bought feedstore chicks discovered they had some accidental males & wanted only pullets.)

We had a hatch in Aug; they sold in about 2 weeks. Then we had an unplanned hatch Sept. 22. Who would want chicks that late? I put out a CL ad as they were hatching & sold over half of them in a couple hours! I took the ad down because I actually want a male. Those are the lav orps that I recently posted. I'm growing them out and will sell them once I have selected my future rooster.

Hit and miss. My entire Halloween hatch was sold 10 days before they hatched.
Chicks in the spring, hens in the summer and roos in the fall. That is our pattern with poultry.
Our pigs litters recently were planned and on schedule for FFA/4H projects. The youth fair is in March. We get more per piglet for show pigs than marketing for backyard meat pigs.
Oh course our Turkeys are generating calls but folks offer pennies on the dollar. They offer $ 20 for a 50# broad breasted Tom. And far less for a 40# lady.
We process what doesn't sell. Time, effort and feed/health care cost must be compensated or no sale.
We eat better than we gross in financial return.
We not desperate to cut losses. Just freezer space.
Our holiday gift list is usually pretty frozen.
Merry Carnivore Christmas everyone.
