EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I will but her poop is normal
Then she's just a runt. Genetic or otherwise.

Not all kids were destined to be supermodels. Not all birds were intended to be blue ribbon winners at shows.
Only a tiny fraction of chickens conform to their breed standard in all respects.

My hen looked like this yesterday, so I checked for an egg, and sure enough, she had an egg, so I waited several hours and she passed it on her own, but looked even worse after, so I checked again and this time she had a shell-less egg. By 9 PM she was so bad that she couldn't walk, and could barely stand, so I brought her in and discovered she was trying to prolapse and i could see just a little bit of the egg. Gave fluids and calcium, but she was getting worse by the minute, so I decided to get the egg out. By the time I was done she could no longer stand or even hold her head up, and she was open mouth breathing. Poop this morning is yellow w/little bits of green and urates, so, going to treat with Baytril, fluids, and Meloxicam and hope she pulls through.

The peas haven't been laying for two months, so she hasn't been getting any lay pellets, though she does have access to oyster shell.

I'm not saying you shouldn't. I'm just glad I haven't found it necessary to do so to the extent I read about here.

A retired professor of poultry science advocates the rigid culling of all snifflers, droopers, feather rufflers, poor eaters, and pale-headed birds to be sure they don't reproduce their kind.

This is just my philosophy and everyone should do what they think is best. But if they couldn't survive on their own in the wild, I don't want them on my farm.
