EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

omg I am so lost on this new site!! I keep seeing the same dang posts over and over, and then I hit quote and I have no idea what I am doing anymore. I am sorry! :( I am so dumb!!

silkies, I ordered chicks from her to add to these. she will ship 4 days or not pending on the weather/heat

GOOD NEWS. it was at correct temp 38.7 but for some reason this incubator randomly flashes numbers and it was doing that when I looked. I purchased a guage for humidity and temp that I put in there so it's all going good. The humidity today is a big higher than I'd like - at 74 - but I think it just fluctuates in there. I keep messaging my friend to make sure I'm doing stuff right. She has the exact same kind and has done 2 batches successfully.

My next question is HEAT LAMPS for BROODER. I don't plan on doing many sets of eggs, but you never know. What brands of heat lamps, plates, etc do you prefer and why. For the singleton chick that was the sacrifice at the cemetery that was brought to us, we used my friends lizards hot rock and a bright red heat lamp and it came out just fine. We got it at 1 day old.

I'm likely going to make a brooder out of a wire dog crate. Now that Im thinking about it the wire might get too hot, so likely I'll like it with cardboard to keep shavings and chicks in, but dogs and cats out.

it is HOT in so cal right now, maybe I could keep in in the chicken run up on a waist high piece of furniture I have. It can't get rained on and I can get electricity back there if I run a long cord to the building. What do you think of that? I do NOT have any broody hens right now. Thinking the temp swings won't be as bad as in the building which is a metal building, it gets SUPER hot in here and then just stays hot until it gets SUPER cold. LOL but we spend way more time here at the shop than at home, so I think it's the best place to keep the babies.

suggestions welcome.

I keep it simple with the brooder, easy to sanitize and helps keep the dust from the house. if you are worried about pets, just leave sides of lid so you can latch but put wire more centered. 60 watt to start then lower watts, chicks outside when outgrown this container. or the dust will be everywhere!

Benny what is "paper micarta" you keep on improving and are very creative and thoughtful when you make them. Love the detailed blades! the colonels blade also deer horn mimic in the blade top?
Thanks Sall!
Yes it has a piece of red deer antler, conecting the bars to the wood.
See this
Micarta can be made from fabric or pepper stripes with epoxy or polyester resin, pressed in a mold.
