EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Ok, both of my malpositions are out! :ya I did help one of them, as it started zipping 15 hours ago. I pulled the half-zipped top back and then left it alone, and it came out an hour later. It has membrane stuck to its back, but I'm just going to leave it alone for now. I only opened the bator to help it out because the humidity was reading 96%. It dropped to 84% and is back to 89% now. The only other time I've opened the bator since lockdown was on day 19 (I thought it was day 20) and I just carefully candled one egg. So right now I have 5 healthy chicks out, and three more pipped. It doesn't look like I have any other malpositions, so I am content to leave them all alone until tomorrow! :jumpy

Three years ago, I found you. I only had eyes for Keurig, and had rejected you for months. Alas, no one had anything nice to say about Keurig, and I was torn!
Standing in that isle, I heard you whisper my name. I spun, and followed your voice. There you were. One look, and I was in love. I simply had to have you! I rushed home with you, and tore you from your trappings. As you released the last of your tasty liquid, I heard the sweet sound of you proclaiming, “as you wish!”
Happy birthday, Westley!

You guys should be very proud of yourselves--you coached me through a 10/10 hatch! Two of the original dozen were early blood rings. Also, the little black one seems very lethargic. I gave it a drop of NutriDrench. What else can I do? The others are so lively, and since it just lays there, it gets pecked a lot.

This sounds like how I feel about my electric kettle for tea!

My joy at hatching all of my viable eggs is dampened slightly by my candle of the other dozen I had going--you know, the filthy ones that got bounced around the county by the postal service.

8 blood rings, 3 clears, and 1 lonely embryo.

I think it was a combination of factors--the shipping (despite being done as recommended by Sally Sunshine), the fecal contamination, and I put them in a cheap incubator and kept fiddling with the heat because it wasn't maintaining temps.

What do I do with a lone baby, if it makes it? Will it adapt alright having siblings that are two weeks older? We have no fall chick days here, so I can't just pick up a buddy for it.

I suppose there is no point worrying about it now--I don't know if it will even hatch.

No more Ebay eggs for me!

I guess you really don’t need pictures. You can use a clear shoe box with lid, cut part of the lid off, and duct tape mesh (outside) for ventilation. You can then put that into the bigger brooder with the older babies. As long as the singleton has that companionship, everything should be great.

I routinely mix different sized and aged chicks. I would wait until it is steady on its get then put it in with the older group. Just keep an eye on it at first. As long as it's steady and able to run around, i think it will be fine :)
