EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

CH, here's what I suggest. Keep a notebook of your hatches with all the info you have been given. Write it down, and look over your notes frequently. It will probably help you remember what the correct numbers and info is.... If you have a different learning style it might not work, but at least you'll have easily accessible info incase your 'net goes down.

Good idea. I find if it isn't written down I never remember. Now if I could just find where that notebook is.

Lockdown is 65-70%. I recommend you run higher (just a bit) unless you can keep your hands off.

Any ideas on sex? I'm pretty sure the big blue/red one is a male. He preens for me already. The three I'm calling the three stooges i can't tell, and I *think* the little one is a hen. She and the chicken hang out together and avoid the three stooges, while the big one watches over the two girls.

The three stooges are just trouble makers. LOL but they don't act like the big male, or skittish like the little girl. They are the ones all up in my face trying to get me to feed them and hold them. lol
LOL the friendliest are prob boys, it usually works that way

one of my daughters easter egger roosters flew and sat on my husbands shoulder the other day. startled him silly.
He said "what the heck, i don't even LIKE you" to the chicken.
brushed the chicken off and then goes to my daughter "why did you have to teach your chickens to cuddle?'

Wowser is all i can say been a rough/interesting 5 days. Finally got power back this afternoon. Bldg I work out of has roughly 4 foot of standing water in it as of this afternoon. The county is split by the Neuse River. River finally crested this afternoon and hopefully will take the extra water with it when it drops. Seeing the destruction and devastation on T.V. doesn't do it justice. Tried posting a link but if you google a combination of Neuse River and Wayne county North Carolina that is my neck of the woods. It's bad is all I can say. Thankful that the family and I are all safe and didn't have any damage. In the big scheme of things losing power for 5 days is minor. I will admit when I came and saw the thread had to start over in a new one it was a bit gut wrenching because that is what a lot of the people here are facing. Hope everyone here is doing well. Haven't done a readback and not sure it will happen at this point. I know I had some tags but can't seem to retrieve them for some reason. If it was anything specific please re-tag, if it was offers of support or sympathy I greatly thank you. Wife is doing good and no twins yet. 8 days to go tomorrow.
glad you stayed safe

especially glad your wife didnt go into labor during the storm, good luck with the clean up

NN I think you'll like them. Different and most curious of the bunch.
how many do you have?

Wow can't believe the other thread got so busy (Ok for realz shouldn't be that suprised on BYC!!!). I candled my 14 eggs the past few days- my 2 "control"/mixed from my flock eggs have veining. Out of the 12 that were shipped to me (6 Salmon Fav's, 6 BCM) I can see veining in some of the BCM but others are too dark, and 4/6 SF's. One of the SF's is definitely dead- had a massively detached air cell and I think is basically scrambled on the inside. One of the others is questionable. I left both of them in because they were quite dear to get and I'd rather just leave them as long as they are not stinking. Also, one of the SFs that had a small crack that I sealed with clear nail polish definitely has a happy embryo moving around.

14ish more days to go. Some of them have saddle air cells. I'm thinking about stopping turning a bit early. I think all of the other air cells have re-attached- I was suspicious about a few that seemed to move a bunch when they arrived but have now stabilized (abnormally shaped but at least they are not moving).

This is the first time I've incubated eggs that were light enough to really see the little buggers!! It was crazy to see the embryo move in response to my flashlight!
sorry about the SF but great on the BCMs!!

The temperature is cold enough this morning that the molt needs to be over, next month my hens will use the amount of daylight to keep their neck away from the chopping block
