EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I made a deal with my daughter that if she takes care of all of the indoor pet chores (feeding, watering, litter boxes, cleaning fish tank, cleaning up messes from animals, etc) for 70 days straight, without missing any days, that we will get some goats. We made a big calendar on our dry erase board to track her progress. If she misses a day she has to start over on the count.

So.... what kind of goats should we get? We only want them as pets, but it would be great if they help keep the pond overgrowth under control too. I only want to get 2. Suggestions? @daxigait and @Sally Sunshine and anyone else with goats ? ?

do you want your daughter to milk the goat? My sister-in-law has a goat that won "Champion Udder" at the Texas state fair

Get a pair of girls.

Nubians if bottle fed, are super awwwwesome goats. I also like Boer's, if they've been bottle fed.

Even withers are obnoxious. We ended up eating ours, because they weren't as friendly, nice, or well behaved as our ladies were lol

I've always had good luck with pygmies, but our pgymies have a tiny area, and even with 4 goats, and chickens, they can't keep the grass down. They DO love the weeds though. We go around the property and cut down tree branches and weeds and throw them into the pen for them, too.

They also love to play, so if you have an old swing or play house, you can make goat toys pretty easily. Ours loved the chicken coop, and love to head butt the chickens and eat their food, we had to secure/fix our coops to keep the goats out of it.

Your fencing is going to need to good, and depending on the type of goat you get, you may have to go unstick their horns. (Another reason we ate our boys. They ripped the fences up with their horns, and would always get their head stucks in the fences.)

Wowser is all i can say been a rough/interesting 5 days. Finally got power back this afternoon. Bldg I work out of has roughly 4 foot of standing water in it as of this afternoon. The county is split by the Neuse River. River finally crested this afternoon and hopefully will take the extra water with it when it drops. Seeing the destruction and devastation on T.V. doesn't do it justice. Tried posting a link but if you google a combination of Neuse River and Wayne county North Carolina that is my neck of the woods. It's bad is all I can say. Thankful that the family and I are all safe and didn't have any damage. In the big scheme of things losing power for 5 days is minor. I will admit when I came and saw the thread had to start over in a new one it was a bit gut wrenching because that is what a lot of the people here are facing. Hope everyone here is doing well. Haven't done a readback and not sure it will happen at this point. I know I had some tags but can't seem to retrieve them for some reason. If it was anything specific please re-tag, if it was offers of support or sympathy I greatly thank you. Wife is doing good and no twins yet. 8 days to go tomorrow.
I'm glad you and the family are safe and have power again. Looking forward to hearing about the twins in a week or so. I hope everything goes well.

I was walking around with turkey poop on my chest, didn't even notice. My friend came over with her kids today, and was laughing, asked me if I knew I'd been pooped on.

We were sitting there discussing chickens. She wants some of my silkies, ducks and any extra geese I hatch. LOL

I told her I'd hatch anything she ever wanted, and hand-raise them too, as long as she took them home when it was time for them to go outside LOL

Set all the eggs!

Wow can't believe the other thread got so busy (Ok for realz shouldn't be that suprised on BYC!!!). I candled my 14 eggs the past few days- my 2 "control"/mixed from my flock eggs have veining. Out of the 12 that were shipped to me (6 Salmon Fav's, 6 BCM) I can see veining in some of the BCM but others are too dark, and 4/6 SF's. One of the SF's is definitely dead- had a massively detached air cell and I think is basically scrambled on the inside. One of the others is questionable. I left both of them in because they were quite dear to get and I'd rather just leave them as long as they are not stinking. Also, one of the SFs that had a small crack that I sealed with clear nail polish definitely has a happy embryo moving around.

14ish more days to go. Some of them have saddle air cells. I'm thinking about stopping turning a bit early. I think all of the other air cells have re-attached- I was suspicious about a few that seemed to move a bunch when they arrived but have now stabilized (abnormally shaped but at least they are not moving).

This is the first time I've incubated eggs that were light enough to really see the little buggers!! It was crazy to see the embryo move in response to my flashlight!
Good luck!

Good morning all

Hmmm... I think we would do better to not have milk goats. Do you have to milk all female goats when they get old enough?
