Yikes! I'm sorry you lost him. Rawhide is definitely not good for dogs - but all things in moderation.

I had a bulldog that ate a cat toy once. cost us 2400 to have surgery to save him, all because he decided to swallow a catnip mouse.

Edit : We give big antlers to the dogs to chew on.

We just whistle and the dogs come back. DH taught Jewel when she was little, and it's rubbed off on Jasper.

I don't have any trouble with goat recall.

And giant J-pup. He's almost 4-mos. Jewel is 3 and weighs about 50 lbs.

Harley took a square rawhide, and chewed it into a perfect circle every single time! I told the veterinarian that something was wrong months before he died. Had she listened to me, he would have lived. No matter how I insisted though, she told me I was wrong.
$4,500, ten days and even giving him plasma didn't save him. He passed on Thanksgiving morning 2010. So much drama involved.
For those that don't know, there is nothing wrong with rawhides. The problem is when the dog swallows big chunks. The rawhide begins to pile up, and block their intestines.
