EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

You'd probably bust out laughing at my sultans, then.

Haven't had them but I have had several varieties of Polish. I liked them but they really got picked off by predators.
I either sold or ate all the rest before the dogs and hawks could eat them.
If I had proper housing in another lifetime I may have crested birds again.

I'm still in the early stage of experiencing different breeds (in addition to Naked Necks, I now have Cream Legbars, German New Hampshires, Speckled Sussex, Copper Marans, and an olive egger and a Lavender Ameraucana cockerel). As far as selection of a breed, probably the #1 deal-breaker is how they do in the heat. I won't even consider a breed that doesn't handle it well - it wouldn't be humane. Other than that, they are all "auditioning" with me. At this point, though, if I had to have only one, it would be the Naked Necks - I wouldn't even hesitate. They have it all - they are puppy-dog friendly, make great meat birds, lay really well, do well in the heat, are super hearty, health-wise, and most of all, I happen to think they are beautiful, from tiny chicks to adulthood. When I saw photos (before I had them), I thought they were seriously ugly, but I still got them for the meat n' heat characteristics. In person, I find them lovely, and looking at them always makes me smile. The naked skin skin is super soft when we cuddle, too. (Maybe the naked necks make them seem more "human" to me? Who knows...) But they are all characters... and they come in all sorts of colors, so that can maybe answer why they hold my interest now and will likely keep me satisfied in the future - personality, functionality, and variety.

I have enjoyed my Cream Legbars - they are the first breed I got. I have found that the best description is that they act a lot like cats (compared to other chickens). They are curious and like to be near you, but like to stay an arms length away. If you sit very still, they may decide to hop onto your lap as chicks - but it has be THEIR idea (just like cats). Otherwise, I find them to be calm while simultaneously being excellent at wariness for predators. (I have had a serious problem with attitude/fighting in the male CLs I've hatched, but it may be just me - they also crow at 2-3 weeks old, which is NUTS!).

CCLs were on my to do list for a long time.
I'm sure if I lived in a climate like yours, I'd still have penedesencas but also likely Cubalayas and Fayoumis.

I recommend you look into all the Mediterranean breeds. They should handle your climate well and perhaps Buttercups would match your personality.

Perhaps it's because your fingers are frozen from sitting in the north woods on a November day.

I forgot. I would have never noticed until my cellphone alarm went off, and my coffee was all messed up.
You have no idea how incredibly happy it makes me to know that you are happy with something that made me happy to do to make you happy! I am humbled by your joy!
In male terms: I am so touched that you appreciate the simple thing I did for you.
The first go around, you get three of every chicken that you researched, and still want.
Then you figure out what really works for you. I would love to have all the pretty blues and olive green eggs. I do occasionally miss seeing white. But I am going to love working with my Rocks to make a better looking bird. When I need new blood, I will enjoy searching (even though it will be frustrating) for the right one.
IMHO, you need to outgrow that. You are your own woman.

The latter is very good advice. After growing up with white leghorns, I branched out to other Mediterranean breeds in later life to get white into my egg basket.
Another breed I really like (white egg) is the Jaerhon. If I hadn't stumbled onto Penedesencas, I'd probably be focused on them. They're a small tight feathered bird that truly handles all temperature ranges well.

I hope not. I'm hoping to get a bunch sorted before dawn and butcher about half.
Hope and reality are 2 different things though.

Hi Benny..... For me crazy is just a short trip.

I'm already there. Perhaps my whole life.

Good luck with butchering! lol

You guys sure butcher a lot of birds! I have yet to butcher one of my birds.... :hmm

Good morning everyone! I hope you all remembered to fall back in the states that do it. I wish we stayed on daylight savings time.
I hate coming home to dark every day. It leaves me no time to do anything in the light. I go to work in the dark year round and that doesn't bother me, but no light ever at home does.
