I hatched those BCM I ordered from from Dave are
Randy Mashburn's champion lines, 1st year birds from Greenfire Farms 2015 French imports, as well as Brenda Little's French imports (Little Peddlers).

Every egg hatched, did I mention I only wanted a few hens?

I never figured you for someone to do anything halfway...

Started my day early today, so that I could come home early - I'm going to try to do that when I can during these dark times, to try to get some time at home before it's dark. Did a visual inspection of all the bird feet I could see (after someone posted on another thread about clipping nails), and I was glad I did. Almost all of my chickens scratch a lot in rocky soil, and therefore keep their nails trimmed naturally. But Lissa must have been dainty lately - she had some SERIOUSLY long toenails. Like, almost an inch!!!! So I managed to pluck her off of the perch without Dumbledore trying to tear me up (maybe he's learned some manners), and carried her inside while I found the dog nail clippers. She's very sweet and hand tame, so she sat calmly in my lap outside while I did the trimming. No bleeding except for one - then I spent the next 15 minutes trying to get it to stop. Couldn't find the styptic powder, so I used flour, and we cuddled for a while until it stopped. I took several selfies with her, but they are unflattering in the extreme (for me - Lissa, on the other hand, is lovely

).

Then I spent the rest of the remaining light digging another 6' x 4' hole, 12" deep. (Mostly done, need to clear some soil from the center.) One more down, two more to go, then I can plant the apple trees...

Sally good to hear from you. Yes for seeds it's awesome. Mine lasted several seasons till I used it for chickens. I did mine different in that I insulated the bottom of tray with styrofoam insulation put light into dirt and then planting trays goes on top of that dirt. A little plastic over the seed trays and your set. Mine was only 2x4 feet. Nowhere as elaborate as his. But it did all the seed I'll every need. The rope is $10 at Home Depot and temps can reach 108* directly touching it. The new one has a chemical smell that I will be watching for trouble with. More like a plastic smell. I still have the base for the seeds and will use the light buried in dirt for brooder. It works really well. $10 gets you 18 feet of warmth for many chicks. They love it. It will easily cover the bottom of the 2x4 brooder box. Part of my experimental incubator involved the old rope light but it would only keep the temps at 96 so I put the element back on with the rope light buried in dirt in the incubator. Now I have bought a new rope light and will try again without the element. I've also got my hands on a free used Bosch dishwasher I'm either going to use as an incubator case to buff the temps of the barn or if it still works well I will use it in the house here as a dishwasher as ours is breaking. They are extremely well insulated and stainless steel inside.

And, I hope that my daughter is half as responsible as Sophie has been as she gets older!

She has really thought out her plan and looked into all the rules. she's a great kid. Had she not said something i would have just assumed she was an adult, We need to start rewarding that kind of behavior when we see it because it's far and few these days. I am still experimenting with breeds but I know I love my seramas. She seems meticulous and thats what seramas are. But I also have some lovely lavender orps, swedish flower hens, polish and favorelles (and some silkies too

) I would rather see her put her money into their care than to have to buy chicks. Mine won't be laying until spring but she & her family are welcome to visit and see what she might like!
