Does it then dry out to become absorbent? I can't figure out what to do in there. Shavings are a huge mess, but they are absorbent. Hay is fine, but gets dirty too fast. If I keep piling it up, then there's "sludge" underneath. I hate the sludge.

My friend and I put crushed limestone as a base. My friend uses those stall mats with holes over that, then shavings. I don't have any mats. I have never used the pellets.

My little egg that's trying to hatch, pipped upside down, has managed to get half-way zipped and then egg yolk started to come out. Survival rates low after that??? or what are the odds it can live?

Do you have flooring or is the limestone the ground? The coop is about 8 inches off the ground. The flooring is plywood.

Ok so first good news...my parents said yes (!) but it comes with a minor detail...since we live kinda far apart from each other (like, 3 1/2 hours) my mom doesn't want to drive that far for chickens she said and she doesn't want you to do the hassle of driving over here either but she did say that maybe if we met halfway then she would be a little more agreeable for the diving portion. Second she said that you could ship them in the mail but I was a little wary of that part only because I've never had any live thing come in the mail before and also how many days can a chick go without food or water ect.? Third I think I am leaning more towards some lavender orps, silkies, and possibly some porcelain d'uccles and Swedish flowers but I have to do a little more research on those last two...okay back up a minute, we are going to get some chicks from the farm store around...oh...first week of March? But I do maybe want to try to hatch some if you have time around February/March

I would rather not ship-only because I never have before and I want you to start with the healthiest chicks possible. I will see what starts laying and we can go from there and if nothing is really laying good yet or the weather is bad maybe we can pick a breed and I can hatch for you and meet your mom halfway or something. Sound good? are you allowed to have roosters?

yes
after hatched out it in a tea cup wrapped in wet paper towel, if you have betadine dab it on the open yolk

I thought you were talking about goats in their sheds.
In my main coop I put down a vinyl floor and use shavings on the main floor, and sand/pdz for the poop board. I also put vinyl on the floor of my smaller coop that is raised, and I use shavings, and just take it all out the back onto a tarp and replace the shavings after putting some DE in the corners and along the edge.

Sounds great, halfway would be good, we will figure out where that is when the time comes though and no we are not allowed to have roosters.
