EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Son decided he'd pop in from 800 miles away to spend a few days with us & get some deer hunting in with the old man, so naturally it's going to rain cats & dogs for then next couple of days. Like he said yesterday, though, deer will move in the rain if they have to, and we'll at least be under roof & not getting rained on.

He just texted me a little bit ago; he's made it into OH...left Racine @ 1:45 his time...should be here sometime this afternoon.
I hope you enjoy your son's visit.

So drawdown means death? Or the egg in the pic is dead? So the air cell on day 18 grows bigger for the chick to hatch but if it gets too big, like in your egg then the embryo died?
no, they are adjusting into position to get out and it creates a dip in the aircell line, see how the pic below the lines are straight then the last line curves down
LL

No, you can see day 18 tracing on the egg. All further AC development is drawdown. It is perfectly normal and happens in preparation for internal pip; this one just happened to be malpositioned so drawdown was as far as it got. Sorry for the confusion!!
above
Where's that post of Sally's explaining drawdown? I'm useless at explanations.
Need help? I have 2 different batches in the incubator. A week or so apart. I'm coming up on lock doe. And don't know what to do. Some eggs need to be locked down and more humidity and some need lower humidity and to be kept turned. Any suggestions?
you got some great info from Phage and ChickenCanoe
Whoever posted the pics of the chicks with silly names... they are beautiful! I LOVE FRIZZLES
@shahtir101 has them
Don't lock down per se. Raise the humidity but continue to turn younger eggs till you get a pip of the older ones.
Since the second batch are at 2 weeks, turning is less critical now than it was the first 2 weeks.
Keep the humidity up till all the chicks are out. The higher humidity won't hurt the later eggs much. After you take the chicks out, let it dry out till the next lockdown.

I love her

the two I just got have been chattering at me when they see me

awesome!! i love it, cant wait to get a goose or 2 (or more)
They sleep decent. Not at the same time but yes we usually get the first sleep cycle of the night for about a 4 hour stretch. After that its about every hour one of them is up for something. It's critical that when they first go down you immediately drop everything and close your eyes for the long??? stretch.
so glad to hear the news

how's the misses?

i hope you guys have a great visit and have a successful hunt!
It certainly is that!
Construction's come to a halt for deer hunting. Actually waiting on help getting the last 3 pieces of paneling up on the high end, @ the peak. Can't handle it alone with a piece of paneling & a nail gun 15' up a ladder; not any longer, anyway.
Sounds like something you and the boy can accomplish while he's out.
AGREED!!
i've only missed 84 posts in 1 day?!? why so quiet??

ChickenCanoe this for you
Thanks for sharing. I liked it. It reminded me of a story I saw about how the Easter Island carved heads were theorized to have been moved to their locations. I've had to figure out ways to do 2 and 3 man jobs by myself many times.
Indeed I knewthat you will like it!
