If I set traps, I would would have to quit my job with all the time I spent relocating raccoons, only to have new ones, plus possums, skunks, and armadillos come back in, as well as all the neighbors' cats (ok, so I don't think armadillos eat chickens, but they are wrecking the garden!) And I can't keep the 'coons out of the chicken water outside of the coops. I just try to protect the chickens at night and keep the local rat population at bay...

Armadillos = Mycobacterium leprae !! Yup - and indeed, we can't grow it in the lab. How do we culture it, you may ask?

Why injecting it into the foot pads of nine-banded armadillos, of course!!!

(Benny, here in South Texas, we've got anthrax, brucellosis, dengue, zika, you name it - it's an interesting place to be a microbiologist!)

It's inulin, a different sort of polysaccharide...

Cooking two Quiche Lorraines tonight. They will be chilled, cut into wedges, and each slide frozen individually for single serve dinners. Tomorrow will be the fruit cake (I'm overdue on that - will start soaking the dried fruit in booze tonight) and a kale quiche. And flan. I'm getting cooking done before the holidays, and now that I'm feeling a bit better, I'm on a roll.

I feel a bit bad - I've gone from begging friends to take eggs to being very stingy (since they're not laying much, and I'm also saving hatching eggs) - short of seeing the chickens every day, I'm not sure they all quite understand the seasonality for those who don't use lights. (I knew, though, since my farmer who provided by eggs pre-chickens was always low or out this time of year...)

When I teach about Coch postulate (I hope I write ir right I am sure I don't!

) the Hansen disease is the example I use to show its trikiness (triciness?)

ONLY because you asked (I would never correct you otherwise, your English is so much better than my Hebrew!) - Koch's postulates. (And trickiness). English is a bizarre language, I can't imagine learning it as a second language, and impressed with anyone who does. When I took German, I was astonished at how... LOGICAL... it was! Dutch, too!

But yes, you have to be careful with Koch's postulates - that stymied us in the identification of Hepatitis C virus for a long time, for example (a frighteningly common chronic viral infection). Also Whipples disease...

Well, show her all those pretty pictures, maybe she'll relent and let you get some more!!!! (Esp. if there are pretty eggs - I've learned that everyone seems to love pretty eggs, even non-chicken people who otherwise think eggs are boring!)

Quiche Lorraine is done and cooling. Turned out well, and I didn't burn it or make a mess. (Miracle!!!) Off to soak dried fruit in booze for the fruit cake.

Benny, I forgot to thank you for posting that video about 12th night cake - that was really interesting and neat. I have my hands full with baking plans this year, but I may try to do that next year - either myself or with family...

My last egg I'm waiting on to hatch I heard peeping and felt movement when I picked it up to check it. And now it's 2 days later and I don't hear anything or feel anything from it. Should I go ahead and try to give it a little help or just wait and see? I sometimes hear that if the chick doesn't poke a hole in the egg to breath on time that they can suffocate and that's what I'm afraid will happen.

My incubator seemed to spike last night between 12am and 5:30am. It was at 108 when I checked. Will that kill my eggs that are 7-14 days old?

Yes, I think it's time to assist. Go slow. Stop if you see blood. :fl
As for the spike, it depends on how long it was that high. I certainly wouldn't pronounce them cooked yet.

I started a small crack in the egg to try and see if I could help it out or at least try to put a small hole where the chicks beak would be for air for him to breath and some clear liquid came out. So, it freaked me out cause I'm afraid of doing something wrong to it. So, I've stopped for now and tried to cover up the tiny hole. I can't see through the eggs very well cause they're dark eggs. What do I do or how do I know how to help the chick out????
