EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Quote: Nice and the grass is green!

mlm Mike
Did you get any chicks from Sally 's jumbo BPR eggs?
I hatched one cockerel.

The weather has made this a bad day to own chickens as well as a bad day to be a chicken

it is morning, the sky is not yet awake
Hello!

Good morning all. Time to wake up and take care of the birds

Hi Mel!

GOOD MORNING, COFFEE CREW!
IT'S TIME TO GET OUT THERE, AND SHOVEL THE WALKS!

Hello MC!
Morning everyone.

Don't slip on that ice while shoveling the snow. No snow here but plenty of slippery decks.
Hello Pensmaster! How did the party go yesterday?

Quote: Hi Banti!

I just washed the blender carafe (leaving the other dishes for later) and went to walk out of the kitchen. I paused at the blender base, and thought about the bananas on the counter. I figured bananas are good for breakfast... Why not make a daiquiri? :lau

Question on the sugar level of Jerusalem artichokes. Is that processed sugar? I've read they are supposed to be good for diabetics would the sugar level be a contradiction? When I've eaten them they don't taste sweet to me.

Told dad hi for everyone. Learned some more family history tonight. Fun night.
Not processed sugar. That . Processed sugar is sucrose and a simple sugar (monosaccharide).

Alcohol can be made from sugars, starches and cellulose.

Thanks - glad you've had a safe day.

I am tempted to put the dark egg on the left in the 'bator with the others - it's a 60g pullet egg. Just because it's pretty. Anyone try incubating marans eggs with regular eggs? How bad of an idea is it?

- Ant Farm
Those are lovely colors. I'm guessing Marans and a Marans/EE cross?

Odd egg?
There's both a fertile blastoderm and something that looks like it has a head and legs....

Top photo is edited to show what I saw. Camera didn't pick it up:

Blastoderm in this pic is just above the largest area of light red blood:

The odd thingy:

1st pic without edits:
Just a bigger blood spot than normal. Still not a concern in my mind.

Going to take my cockerel to the butcher tomorrow cause he is starting to crow. He is a 3 month old EE and still pretty skinny, so I am thinking of just making him into soup? Any other good recipes for skinny chickens? I have cooked Orpington cockerels before but they are much fatter so I just cooked them normally.
My feeling is that if a raccoon can find meat on it, so can we. Make sure you let the meat rest. bone in. for at least 3 days.
For a 3 month old bird, if you don't part it out, brown it breast up at about 375 for about 15-20 minutes. Then drop the heat to about 220, breast down in a broth till the meat starts to fall off the bone. Sea salt, fresh ground pepper and perhaps some rosemary. That's how I usually do it.

Overpriced
That's why I haven't bought one but sometimes you get what you pay for. Quality in a neat small package.

Thak you, it is difficult!
The more languages I've experienced, the more I realized how many deviations from the rules can be found in English and I was glad I didn't have to learn it later in life.

I hope everyone is well today. I will catch up soon. Have been battling down the hatches, vaccinating goats, putting put hay, etc. as we get freezing rain heading down to three tonight.

I just started a new thread
You might be a red neck if...
I just stood in an open barn blow drying a goat that has been sick so I could put a blanket on her since she was shaking from the mist that has changed to freezing rain as we head down.
The things I have done that I would never have imagined

and I laugh imagining the reaction of non animal people I know.
how are things at your corner of the state?

Here are the totals for the 3rd week.
I am surprised that Purple hasn't been doing as great as I had thought, last week seemed to struggle only gaining 18% but it was better this week at 58%.
Yellow is still growing steady but still very small! Someone suggested might be banty but the only banty I have is a Silkie but I made sure not to incubate any of her eggs..... But we do have some Hamburg hens a silver and a gold maybe it came from one of them, but its all black.

Oh I remember what I wanted to ask, could it have been something to do with the incubation process that stunts their growth? I ask because my friend incubated with her incubator and after looking here and reading, I noticed that perhaps her humidity was too high, thats why only 7 of 19 hatched successful!~
Since it sounds like your birds may be crosses, there's may be lots of genetic reasons they are growing at such different rates.
Incubation could have something to do with it but not likely. Nutrition and genetics are contributors. If there isn't adequate feed and water trough space, more docile chicks can be getting less food.

Another issue I had when weighing was a crappy scale. The same bird would weigh differently each time I set it on the scale so watch out for that.

How are the Ayam Cemani doing?

Them darn hawks we lost a chicken the other day and he just went swoop down and attacked my neighbors
That's too bad. How many and what breeds of roosters do you have running with the birds?

Did you see the second half of the post? Dropping to 20s with 26mph winds suddenly tonight. While I don't envy you guys your cold, part of me would prefer it if it would just get cold and stay cold until spring. This yo yo in temps is always hard to navigate...

- Ant Farm
5F here this morning and high in the mid teens today. Near zero tonight and then a warmup.
Yoyo is hard on lots of things. Perennials, trees and animals.

I did hear on the radio that it's getting super super cold and windy for some of you - hope you all are bundled up!!!
fl.gif
I managed to keep one coop at 21F. Most of the rest are ranging from 8-15.

Nope. I don't really understand all the nuances of cold - below 30F is scary for me!

I suppose there's cold, very cold, really, cold, really really cold, and then ------ (too cold to talk)...

- Ant Farm
And then there's freakin' cold. That's Wyoming Tetons cold.

Ever thrown boiling water out the door and had it come down as ice?
Yes, this morning. Just wear gloves so you don't scald yourself.

Um... I thought you had to go to outer space for that... Mars, anyone?
I saw a show yesterday where they were doing it several places.

"Chicken Crow" somehow just doesn't flow right

Yeah, hawk sounds better.

Nice and the grass is green!

I hatched one cockerel.

Hello!

Hi Mel!

Hello MC!
Hello Pensmaster! How did the party go yesterday?

Hi Banti!

Yes grass is green and growing like crazy. We are a whopping 30* right now so maybe it will quit growing so fast. Weather man has us at 26* not sure where his reading is from.

The party was a lot of fun. Many relatives I haven't seen in 45 years were there. Fun to reminisce. Probably 60 folks showed up.
