Sometimes if you have something good, it's best to just work with that rather than bring something else in with flaws. It usually ends up being a waste of time and labor.

Much as we'd all like to have perfection, in chickens, dogs, horses, cattle, or any other domestic animal, even tropical fish, there's always a weak link in the chain that's eventually going to manifest itself.

The father is still around. And in-laws.

It's usually just one, each time but not always. I see a pair of coyotes cross the property all times of day and night.
When I put out game cams, there is a parade of raccoons moving through the yard.

I just want people to keep in mind that if they get [COLOR=FF0000]A[/COLOR] perpetrator, not to believe problems are over.

Hence why I still have traps set, despite dispatching the beastie.

Next week we will celebrate Hanukkah for 8 days ( yes 8 days off! e ) and there is a custom in this holiday to eat fried delicates So you have the usual donuts with hundreds of fillings And from North Africa we have the "Spinj" that what you are seeing And from east Europe you have the "latkes" made with potatoes and onion ect. But as much as l love them, I can't let myself eat them! My dear mother is an EXPERT in making them!

That is sad. Trying to stay away from the fried stuff? I knew where all the best donut shops in town were. 2 near my house and 2 in the middle of the city. So much better than the chain donut shops. However I haven't been to one in years. I don't even miss them - much. And Happy Hanukkah! Enjoy the vacation.

Indeed my friend it's a hard battle! And thank you! This year it is at the same time with Christmas so I wish you an early happy Christmas to you and your family! I will enjoy it!

Some farmers from the nord of Israel had problems with wild boars ruining the kibbutz orchid.
So they came to the Zoology park of Tel Aviv and took some lions scate, put it in a sack and draged it all over the orchid. No more boars!
You can use the same method, wolves, bears, mountain lion urine or scate will do.

That is so true.
Just as all children aren't destined to be super models, not all animals are destined to be SOP blue ribbon candidates.
It is just a huge challenge with such a small gene pool. Even if you have excellent examples, vigor can be lost with too much inbreeding. And, IMHO, with chickens, vigor is the most important thing in selection. That's why I rarely help a chick hatch. I don't want to perpetuate the needy.

Hence why I still have traps set, despite dispatching the beastie.

Mink and weasels are very hard to trap in the same way as one could a raccoon or opossum.
I've never caught one in a havahart type trap. I think they could squeeze out of the one I have.

We have our own calendar and all the holidays is according it.
So Hanukkah is always in 25 of the month of Kislev כ"ה כסלו
And it could vary if you compare it to the Gregorian calender.

Wild boars are native here, and are one of the hunting animal, especially by the Christian community and some of Jewish people that don't mind eating them.

Latkes! Yummmmmmmm.

My heritage is Pennsylvania Duetsch on my dad's side and Irish and Cherokee Indian on my mom's. I grew up with mom making the Pennsylvania Duetsch version of Latkes when she had left over mashed potatoes. She would add a bit of flour for them to hold together, egg, onion and salt and pepper. Drop by tablespoon fulls into a lightly greased skillet and brown, flattening them with a spatula as you turn them. I made them for my husband one day and he really liked them.

I'm trying to get a cold. Just what I need. Tomorrow I need to bake cookies and Pumpkin/cranberry bread. Should be interesting especially since DH is trying to come down with the same cold. Since we haven't been around people until yesterday when we had to take our diabetic cat to the vet for his monthly check up and were feeling crappy by the time we got home at noon we have no idea where the cold came from unless it rode in on the mail.

So I had a stomach virus around Thanksgiving. Only fitting and proper I guess that I'm sniffling and snotting my way though Christmas.

At least the weather has modulated meaning the chickens are out in the run and not hanging around inside the coop. Some of my hens are starting to sing their egg song again and hanging around the nest box so hopefully more eggs will be forthcoming. I threw a few ceramic eggs in the boxes this morning just to spur them on a bit and freshen up their memories of 'oh yeah, I'm supposed to lay eggs there!' My luck they will all go broody on me. Little *****.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a grump today.

My husband is from Ireland & they make latkes there too, but they call them boxty. I am not a fan of them but he loves them. I love doughnuts though. Hope you have a happy Hannukah!

I am making my skinny rooster soup today, hopefully it turns out well. They gave me the giblets & there was something there I didn't recognize, looked like 2 large beige kidney beans. Didn't know what it was so I threw it away. Hopefully it wasn't something that should go in the soup.
