EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I number eggs and make a similar chart. Then I put the eggs in pedigree bags at lockdown so I can leg band chicks with the flock # (essentially sire/cock #). I sometimes use 2 or 3 colored zip ties to identify the chick and tie it to a specific egg number till the birds are big enough for numbered legbands.
That way, when they're mature, I know the sire and sometimes dam, plus sibling performance as well as knowing the size, color and any other special characteristics of the egg they came out of.

Quote: Excellent point! I'm going to make my family watch Chicken People over the holidays, just to see their reactions. They are already worried that I've lost it...

Thanks you two.... I'm trying as hard as I can to save her.
You just keep doing what you're doing. A vet would probably do the same things, and charge you a bundle.
You're doing great.
Quote: Well, when my rooster was attacked by dogs, I was fairly certain he'd be ok, but I was so completely upset and freaked out, that I didn't trust myself to think straight. I ended up paying to go to the avian vet in town the next day (who's great). It was expensive. But I was glad I did, mostly because I was a basket case, but also because she put him on an antibiotic and pain medications that I didn't have access to. She gave me detailed instructions about how to take care of him, and did not expect me to come back for follow up. She even answered a few questions on the phone later (no fee).

I actually DID go for a follow up (mostly because I wanted her input on a particularly large wound that was scabbing in, and when it was ok to put him outside and avoid fly strike). She was BEYOND thankful - she said that she usually never gets to see chickens on follow up to see how they heal.

You still may not chose to do that, but if you find a good one, since this is so very upsetting to you, it could help ease your mind. Just a thought - I don't think it's necessary, I think you're doing all the right stuff.

Quote: No, Dax, you're doing great as well. Your girl is very sick - I'm pulling for her. All you can do at the moment is support her like you are.
Quote: It depends - my German New Hampshires started laying VERY late - and one is still not laying - they were hatched in February.

I must be coming up in the world; I have people!
All this time I thought only important people had people

:lau
I think you're important. Thread wouldn't be the same without ya....

Don't shortchange yourself. I've monitored scores of incidences where you've given solid, common sense advice when I, and likely others, hadn't the first clue what to advise. More than anything, I think, you're just reaching out to understanding ears from those of us who've gone through similar circumstances.

I disagree, but thanks for the kind words :hugs

Re: last sentence: That's for sure. It's helped me more than I can say knowing I'm not alone in this whole disaster.

I am chick sitting my friend's chicks and incubtor. Two chicks are a couple weeks old, and one just hatched today. What should I do about housing the new one? I only have one heat lamp.

Peep, if you don't have a heating pad, what I'd do is leave the chick in the incubator until it's not so fragile... 48 hours maybe? Then, I'd try to put the chick in with the 2week olds. I've had chicks with a large age difference age difference (2 days to 1- 1 1/2 months) live together.....They did fine.

@ChickenCanoe
, what do you use for your pedigree bags? I went down the rabbit hole on the internet looking at all the options for garlic and onion storage bags, but would love to hear about ones you already know work...

Oh, and the chicken sitter ALREADY endured a full hour of in person orientation and a tour. (And she used to live in my guest house, and has taken care of them multiple times). I do this every time - she's used to it. :lau

Okay, you win the crazy award. :gig
I only gave my neighbour that was watching the chickens a 15 min tour....
