EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Here's my biggest coop - 16x8. The Naked Necks insist on roosting out in the open part - they have nothing to do with the enclosed hen house part that I worked so hard to build, except to lay eggs there. I love this open air design, and so do my birds. I live in a much warmer climate, but just throwing that out there to follow up on ChickenCanoe's comments. I'm building a second one this size when I get back. (And I just made a decision that may mean I need to build a third!!!!)

This is what I did when the forecast was that the temp would suddenly drop from 80F in the afternoon to 28F with 25 mph winds - just in case (at a minimum to keep frost bite at bay). They roost on those roosts you can see in the corners. They were totally fine. Naked Necks are tough, even with low temps in cold climates. Oh, and this design is awesome for deep liter method...

Very helpful, thank you!

Since many of you, 'specially those with crumb snatchers around, have a hectic day ahead tomorrow, and BYC will be the furthest thing from your mind, I'll say it now

Merry Christmas, y'all

May you all stay safe and happy, your pleasures be many and your troubles few

and if you're headed "over the river & through the woods", watch out for those loose nuts behind the wheel out there on the roads

Try to keep Grandma from getting run over by reindeer

Above all else. remember the REASON FOR THE SEASON

Be safe out there; I'd rather talk to you than about you come Monday

GOD BLESS YOU, ONE AND ALL
:hugs :love :hugs
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

With a lot of effort, you can probably get there, but yeah a lot of work, and more time than you were probably hoping it would take. :/
I will have to get a few more for another group. I will try to get a trio from one of the big breeder next year or so more chicks. I was hoping to have a good base, but I don't have enough diversity. I didn't with her, but this really undercut it. With her though I had two trios one good one and one OK one.

I hope nothing happens to your guy he sounds cool. If you get some chicks this year that don't get the NN gene I would be really interested. Sorry, while I like what several have said about hardiness I don't like the look. I had two two NN Ameraucana pullets for green egg layers in the group that got ms. They were beautiful pullets.

Yeah, It was already on my plans lol
Sine you don't live in the South I would do what I did in my big coop. I put the roost and poop board on the short end and put venting along the top of the high end where everything rises to anyway. Then I put windows in that are on the East and west sides. They are in front of the roost though so wind can blow through, but not on them. I used used storm windows that I got cheap on Craigslist I can open and close covered with hardware cloth.
