EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Ok I need to ask a stupid incubator question.... I use a hovabator Genesis incubator (3 actually  ) and 1 small magicfly incubator. Has anybody seen a huge increase in their electric bill from the use of their incubators. My electric bill has skyrocketed and our heat and dryer is propane. I do run 1 heat lamp and 1 electric oil filled radiator but thats about it. I would think it should be way higher in the summer when the air is running.... :idunno

Where we are at the meter gets "read" every other month the other month it's estimated. Sometimes it's high I have noticed a slight increase while running but nothing that would be alarming.

Also rates go up here all the time so it's hard to tell what is increase and what is usage.

Guess I'll be resurrecting the duck tape brooder- was hoping to get a new one, but forgot.
(Duck tape brooder is a fish tank held together with duck tape)

I've used the fish tank numerous times. Now I just use a cardboard box from work. Disadvantage can't see chicks, advantage their brooder goes into compost pile when done.

Here's a picture of my rooster from last years NY HAL out enjoying a short free range day.

Quote: I have a suggestion for the next time you set eggs:
"Upgrade" you 'bator again by installing a viewing window at eye level as you're laying in bed. You'll still be able to monitor the goings-on inside in the middle of the night, but you won't have to get up & go back to bed. MC can probably give you the details.
