Short version. Dig large trench/hole in ground. Put all branches and logs you would ordinarily burn into trench. Put dirt you dug out back on top of all the branches. Rains from winter soak up in the branches and logs giving you a water bank for the summer.


Also compost since it decomposes.
 
Lay better Year round or seasonally?


So far they've beat the chickens in summer and winter. Mostly, the odd hot then cold weather has thrown them off a bit and only 3 have laid this winter but when they do lay they lay for weeks without taking a day off, I had one lay for almost 3 weeks before she took one day off and was right back to laying again.
