EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

This one was!!!! Last of the pipped eggs has now hatched. I'll give the two unpipped Marans cross eggs the rest of the day, but I think we're done. 14 of 16 that made it to lock down, all within ~18 hours of each other.

@Chaos - better feed to weight ratio, fewer feathers to pluck/no hairs to singe, excellent taste, and yes, a lot easier to know where to cut when processing. Yup! But I still think they're cute chicks.

Just out of curiosity, I just treated my birds with Wazine, and can't eat any of their eggs for a while. On the off chance some of them are fertile, would it make any sense to incubate them? Would they even develop with the medication still being in the hens? Would the Wazine eliminate the possibility of fertility?

There was something on this in the notes.... Hang on a bit....

There's some information on BYC (can't remember where, Kathy would know) about chick malformations - I wouldn't.

Congrats on the hatch. You have my condolences that your chicks aren't fully feathered.

Us too. We have about 10 years worth of chicken in th freezer... I am so glad God made vacuum packers so the meat lasts forever.....we may never need chicken, sauerkraut or broccoli for the rest of this life and half of the next......

Can I interest anyone in10 gallons of sauerkraut ?
ME ME ME ME ME ME!!! I LOVE SAUERKRAUT!!!!!!!
The placentas are TOTALLY salvageable. The stinkier, the better... for dog training... but my car?????

He was laughing at me for putting them in the middle console. Told me it's a good thing he loved me. He had on gloves and a mask and bleach. He seriously resembled a CSI crime scene clean up thing. I was amused.
ewwww lol
Who needs caffeine to get an adrenaline rush in the morning. You just feed the cat and pet her, go feed the goats, and when you get back from feeding the goats. You lift the tarp that covers the barn opening to find two feet in front of you a pair of skunks eating the food the cat left. That was a wake-up. Good or bad they did not care about me at all. I talked and they only went a couple of feet back on the cat house top (big enclosed crate).

ahhh skunks!
We are actually! it's warming up today!!! So glad. My goats are happier. They shiver when it is below 40. LOL and apparently aren't happy about the cold.

OH my TOM turkey was preening today, with his feathers out and showing off to the other turkeys.

He's the only one with a giant snood - so I'm wondering if I somehow got lucky and have 4 girls and 1 tom???!! None of the turkeys have a snood like his, nor have they preened.

I went out and found one of my large cockerels had pinned Maple (Bantam) down and was doing what roosters do. He's 4+ times her size!!

I kicked him off and took Maple inside, she's not walking and her wings and tail are dragging.... Hope she's OK. Meanwhile, mister cockerel has made it onto the sell list.

i want one
Should be pure. You don't think so? They're all still peeping. I know because I had to catch them so many times yesterday.
lol.png
They wouldn't go in the pond so I grabbed a few and lobbed them in. It was more fun than I'll admit.

She could be.
Does she crave strange food @ 2 AM, like saurkraut topped with strawberries?
Does she have more than the usual amount of mood swings?
Does she complain of lower backache a lot?

If none of the above are true, she needs to go on a severe diet.
LOL

Here is a closer pic
looks preggers, let us know when she pops

Great news, I don't know how she was hiding in the smaller coop, but my hen was inside when I got home so I missed her last night. There is no way in or out of the run unless I open it so she was hiding somewhere between hens which is highly unusual for her since she is low man.. I am happy

AWESOME!!!
Okay, I NEED NNs!!

what color do you think they will feather out?
