@ChickenCanoe Yes, I am NPIP. I went to the hassle of getting the state permits and was selling them at half my normal price, and you are right mailing eggs is a PITA. The thing that broke the camels back to me was them wanting me to be responsible for the post office breaking the eggs. I het hatching mailed eggs and I hate shipping them, too much time involved for the money and too much down side with people being able to say you have bad eggs and so forth..

Toads are a sustainable meat chicken I have developed.

They look great. What did you cross with the Cornish X or is it a trade secret?

The name toad really threw me off.

For shipping eggs, I use foam egg shippers. It was a PITA finding an appropriate sized box to fit the various sized shippers. I even considered having boxes custom made.
For a 25 hole foam shipper, they fit inside a large priority flat rate box. However, due to the light weight, shipping would be cheaper to ship priority with a plain box.
Then again, one would have to find an appropriate sized box that allows for reinforcement but not too big. My goal in packaging is to not have broken eggs no matter how badly handled unless a forklift ran over the box.
Then, you have to make sure the NPIP form is in the box and the NPIP # is on the outside.
Then determine how to mark the box. Just mark fragile or hatching eggs or live embryos or no special marking.
Once when I marked the box as containing live embryos, they wanted me to pay shipping for live animals which was more than I got from the purchaser for packaging, shipping and eggs.
Then I want to assemble the freshest, cleanest eggs, of the darkest color available and only of a size appropriate for the breed. I keep at least 3 primary flocks/lines. I number the eggs so that I can inform the purchaser of the pedigree so they know which eggs are of unrelated stock so they aren't breeding full brothers/sisters.
I do charge for the packaging and shipping costs over and above the egg prices.
That has been a problem from time to time when I didn't anticipate how high shipping would be. Shipping to Puerto Rico ate up most of my profit.

Ha! Profit. That's a funny word referencing selling hatching eggs. It's break even at best.

All the cemani eggs are developing!!

Even the ones that were 2-3 weeks old, and the two that sat in a puddle!

The rains have stopped the hen laying though as no eggs for a week.

Sometime today would be nice
Whaddaya want...a written invitation?

Took the morning off work - I'm about to head up into the attic to see what's what...
Today is a sad day here. We woke up to find that our 12 year old siberian Husky passed away in the night :( She was a mischievious brat right up until the end. Dreamy will be teriibly missed.

I'm so sorry.

OK, I'm caffeinated and awake, and so I'm heading up into the attic to get that roof panel pulled back down, and see what the options for tacking it down more securely are. BBL.

(I hope)

I have more turtle pics! I thought the terrapins had broader ear stripes? LIZ, where you at?

Me too 9 NN in the bunch. Wife's friend wants some. Maybe the four she saved.
lau.gif
I doubt it.
Thanks. That box was the holding pen while I cleaned up the brooder that is still inside due to the wife's new found concerns with them out side in the barn and the possibility of the power going out. Although tonight and tomorrow we have a good chance of it going out. 50-60 mile an hour winds in the valley. Which means where we are at will see that and more.
LOL!! good luck on the weather!!

But but but... You're so fun to TEASE!!!!!!!! {{{whine}}}

By how big the tuft of down on the front of the neck is. His is NN because of the tiny tufts. Mine are Nn and have big tufts (will have more feathers on neck and chest as adults).

This photo shows Tank (a NN) in front, and a Nn (I forget who) behind to the right. The black one to the left is also Nn. See how Tank has only a couple tufts on his neck, and his upper chest is so bare?

Yikes. Got any hot water bottles?
@BantyChooks this would be good in notes??

You're going to hate me for this but I put 18 guinea eggs in the bator this morning. I'm going to put some duck eggs in tomorrow.
why guineas
sickbyc.gif

Does anyone know why one of my chickens keeps laying these soft-shelled eggs - despite eating layer feed????

Every few days, I find an egg in there, that's soft and squishy, rather than hard shelled.
she's young, still getting her system going
idunno.gif

This just started happening a couple weeks ago - she's the only one who's done it too - So, I don't know. I'm almost wondering if it's because of the weather changes - she skipped a few days of laying when it got REALLY cold - then started throwing the soft eggs when it got hot again.

I'm guessing it's just a fluke. the only thing that's weird - is I'm also getting her NORMAL egg, less then 24 hours apart.... so is it possible she's laying 2 eggs in a 24 hour span and that's why one's soft?
could be
As I was leaving for church this morning, I noticed there was a blanket blocking a vent. I pulled it away, and accidentally snagged a wire, but didn't think much of it and saw nothing different..... Well, guess I didn't look hard enough. I just got home and the Bator was at 70°F.
he.gif

A nut got pulled off one set of wires, but it was easily fixed.

Here's hoping they'll survive this comedy of errors....
OH NO!!!!!!
this is why i will be soldering my connections!! I HATE WIRE NUTS!!!

I am going to be using a toe punch for the first time tonight. I am a tad nervous about it. I hope the chicks do not cry.
hugs.gif

I promise - I am very anti-injury. I would have to be taken to the hospital across the street.... and be treated by former and current students of mine. And explain whatever stupid thing I was doing when I was injured. No thank you.

It was a VERY long weekend down here. The people across the pond from me lost their storage building and their trampoline is in my pond! A tornado went right down the street our church is on, the church is fine, but several homes on that street were ripped apart. No injuries reported in that area. Several of my kids that I teach in children's church had damage to their homes (one lost their roof, another their storage shed blew into their garage). My daughter and I were at the grocery store when a tornado watch came up, they wouldn't let us leave the grocery store, apparently there was a tornado about 5 miles down the road that had touched down. I'm just glad it seems to be over for now! I am NOT a fan of bad weather. I don't even like thunderstorms.
so scary!! glad you guys are ok
Hi all! I posted on here not too long ago that I was thinking of making an incubator from an old metal heater. Well, my awesome, talented DH made my dreams come true yesterday! I now have a wooden cabinet lined with 2 inch thick Styrofoam (with 1/4" vent holes around top, about nine of them) and with a inner box that has an intake fan to pull air in from the bigger box, and blows it out with another fan before a heating element. Got the wafer thermostat hooked up, showed a steady 99-100 degrees all evening! 40% humidity with NO water in the pan! Now, here's my question. The thermometer/hygrometer I am using is a cheap one from Walmart, the kind you just pop a battery in and let it work. The range is showing the high as 102 and the low as like 96, with the temp staying constant. Now, my husband explained to me what all that means, and to only pay attention to how steady the main temp number is. But I would like to buy one that keeps the tenths of a degree and cycles the high and low more often (I think this one keeps the high and low until you reset it or it goes higher or lower). I think it would help me tweek the wafer thermostat more accurately.

Any recommendations on a better thermometer/hygrometer?
frow.gif

I think @DwayneNLiz had a pretty nice one with 10ths of a degree, but I can't see the brand in the pics.... Might wanna poke around in the notes a bit, I know there's suggestions in there, but I'm on mobile so it takes a donkey's age to load.
mine is from china, took 3 months to get here, no idea what the brand is, but it was like $4
Anyone hooooooome? I'm due to ship eggs this week to a cold region. What do y'all use to keep the eggs warm? Do hot hands get too hot? What lasts longest? Obviously they don't need the warmth leaving from here...
good luck!!
Chick count..

6 Doms 100%
6 Yokohamas 100%
4 toads 40%
2 Cuckoo Maran 100%
Legbars 6 45%
Speckled Sussex None yet,,

Picture from inside the hatcher, I opened the door!

And here is my White Legbar chick!!! MY first one of the year, HE is the gal on the top of the photo..

A guy wrote me an email wanting to know if I would discount these to 5$ each if he bought 20 0f them... I have not answered him yet, as I do not want my acid tongue to get me in trouble with a potential customer...

Why you ask would I be snarky to him..

This is from Myers hatchery page

@BantyChooks

Maple is now panting occasionally.... I don't think she's going to make it.
her toes dont look that bad
@Sally Sunshine

She wanted to know if you've hugged a duck recently.

Apparently, today is duck hugging day.

love.gif

It didn't really want to be hugged, but once she got it, it let her.
LOL!!!
I think I just killed a chick..

I had one that was shrink wrapping so I helped it out. Good thing, I think she will make it.

I Had a toad shell that had pipped the same time, the membrane was white and drying, so I "helped unzip" it and it is bleeding. IT is a no win when to help or not, I always make the wrong choice......

i hope its ok

I've got 100 beds! Everyone is invited to Mardi Gras.

YAYYY!!!!

Ok, here's a pick of my first serious incubator. I am going to make a member page (but I'm on my cell right now and too lazy to walk to my computer), and I PROMISE I will update as the hatch progresses and keep everyone up to date! Not starting hatch until February 26.

The wooden box has two computer fans, one for intake and one for blowing out past the heating elements behind that metal grate. DH tells me if one element goes out, another will take over. The thermostat is underneath the egg shelf near the intake fan. The shelf has sides on it so chickies don't fall off. The whole thing is SUPER quiet.
Great job!!!

Crossing WHAT with CornishX? CornishX already being a hybrid, don't really breed true.
I thought they were talking about something being 1/2 pound.
