Checked temp with two other thermometers.
Okay, that sounds fine... What day are they quitting? Lockdown or early in incubation?

(I always loved that routine - did anyone else get this?)![]()
Thanks! I'm done for now. Got the wedged part pulled down. Also surprised a raccoon who has apparently taken up residence in the attic, and got to watch him crawl right into the wall of the house. I hate going up there - it's so depressing. There are so many friggin' gaps all over there, and it's all pretty gross. I'm just pretending I didn't see it until I can get this whole thing redone (and maybe pour concrete into the walls!!!!)Quote:
The ends of the purlins are toast - nothing will hold. I'm going to have to get some new 1/2" boards about 24" long (either treated or I will need to treat them myself) to splint it - I don't have any scrap wood that will do the job. Then I'll have to somehow manage to get the metal tacked down onto the good wood from underneath (not a safe way to do it from above).

I gotta eat some lunch and then head to work. I'll probably need to head up there again this afternoon/evening if I can figure out the splint. This is why I live in the other "real" house - this thing is a mess.

I haven't used toe punch but I've been tempted.I am going to be using a toe punch for the first time tonight. I am a tad nervous about it. I hope the chicks do not cry.

I once had 7 thermometers in my homemade cabinet. They were all wrong, even those from an incubator company.Checked temp with two other thermometers.
Which one is Georgia?
Can you post pictures of the frostbitten bird without the bandages?
Onion poultice, banana peel, witch hazel and aloe are all useful homeopathic remedies. Do you have access to horsetail stalks or mullein flowers?
He is around 20-25 pounds.
I have showed this picture a lot to show just how big my toads are:

It is the best way for me to show it.
The bird on the left is a turkey (heritage) at 11lbs and 1 ounce. The one on the right is Bert's son at 15 lbs 4 ounces. Both are dressed with no giblets inside them.
When we piece these my wife and I get 5 meals out of them. We like to roast them because of the juice it retains when roasted. A drumstick or thigh is a full meal. The breast are 4 servings for us. 2 on each half.

@ChickenCanoe , I looked but can't find the post where Ralphie explained, but his "toads" are the product of a meat bird project of his - he managed to raise CXs old enough to breed and lay (by restricting their feed and having them forage and exercise), and I think he crossed in Dixie Rainbows (which is a "slower" broiler you can get from some hatcheries), and now he is crossing back and refining. That is a full sized propane tank in the photo - they are the size of turkeys and don't have the leg and heart issues CXs do and he indicates that he doesn't have to restrict their feed like he does the CXs. He's done some very impressive work on management of Cornish Crosses regarding feed restriction and foraging behavior. I was going to try to emulate him and others, but ended up getting Naked Necks early, and left the CX idea behind after that.

That sounds right, because of the frostbite issue (like the boy in that photo).
