EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

You have to think about why you want certain breeds. Are they a fad, do you want great layers or meat birds, are you raising chickens to sell or for pets or a hobby or to try to turn a profit? Are you choosing chickens that are pratical for the kind of care you are able to provide? (cold vs heat hardy) Do the different breeds you are choosing get along? I see so may cool chickens and when I got started I got a few of each. But even 2 coops, 1 duck pen and my seramas is a ton of work and money. You might not eat your chickens but chances are the people buying them at these swaps might... When I teach critical thinking skills, I go by this method "STOP. LOOK. LISTEN. THINK...... GO. This should take you at least an hour if you are doing it right to start when practicing good decision making skill.

Mix breeds are wonderful!
They are much more healthier than pure breed, they lay much more eggs, and faster then pure breed ( Black sex link, red Sex link)
They produce meat much faster then pure breeds, ( Cornish cross ) and some beautiful colors egg,( green eggs) all of this is because the mixed breeds have a genetic treat called Heterosis or hybrid vigor.
But they have 1 problem, they don't sell very good! people usually don't want them!
It is exactly like mixed cat and dogs, they are much more fun and health but not a lot of people want them!
So if you want eggs, meat, a lot of color that change in every generation go had and have a mix flock, if you want something that you can sell and earn some dollars from, you should have pure breeds.
I would like to make money.

The pattern is tighter on the Barnevelders then on those right? The double laced Barnevelders are really beautiful.

Well, I cheated and looked it up on Google images, and the sources said "Wyandotte".

Any pictures of the blue eggs? If they are, I am interested. I originally was going for Sapphires, but the color was not there. The one Sapphire pullet I got lays an egg that is like the tinted whit paint. There is a blue green tint, but that is it. I got rid of the two cocks and just left the leghorns with my Ameruacana.
Here is one of my roosters last fall before the winter trimming.

Middle is legbar outside are EE, you can tell by shape too.

Below is a carton it looks like 3 or 4 Legbar eggs. The blue is never as bright in real bright light
I took this last summer just to show all the variations in color.

Here is a little White legbar pullet. I think she knows @Fire Ant Farm look at that scowl.

These are three eggs they laid under the nest box in the bedding, but with low lights the blue really pops..

What thermometer hygrometer do I get I'm going crazy

It's going to be extremely hard to recommend one from a big box store based on the fact that you don't really know what is available until you get there. There were a few recommendations that @ChickenCanoe gave you.

Brinsea Spot Check

And a ThermoWorks that I don't remember the link of.

I suspect both of these will be online purchases though and will not be found in store.
