EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Yes, I finally gave my girl 8 eggs to sit on. I went to our Amish neighbor's farm and horse traded a dozen of my eggs for cooking for 6 hatching eggs. He gave me 7 and when he saw my Welsummer eggs his eyes popped. He wound up asking for some to hatch out so I came home and separated the boys so hopefully, the Welsummer and Welsummer/Speckled Sussex cross roosters will get busy and give me some fertile Welsummer eggs by next week.

I found one bantam egg under my hen so I left it and swapped out the fake eggs with real ones. She was very good about me doing that but watched really carefully as I removed one and stuffed two under her.

Here she is, in all her prehistoric glory. The appearance is really deceptive. While my other Welsummer hens can be a bit stand offish, she is really a sweet and friendly hen. I'm wondering if that is because she was broody raised and not brooded in the house like her mother was.

If her appearance is any indication, she is going to be a fierce momma.

Dolly is wearing a hen apron. I think it gives her a nice motherly appearance, LOL!!

Congratulations everyone on the new baby goats. They make me want a couple-4-5-6. It's kinda like chicken math isn't it?

@mlm Mike I tried the peroxide twice yesterday. It is less stinky, but not right yet. I will try something else if it still smells tonight.

How close are the other two of yours that are due?
What about that med that draws out infection that MEL and Dr. Pole use???? @meltel

I just picked up the S&G NN chicks from the post office. They had a rough ride - left Idaho on Tuesday, and arrived at the post office this morning. There was Grogel in the box, and they were snug for warmth, but one didn't make the trip, and a few look a bit rough (and I wonder if they will survive). Others look mostly ok, but all were chilled. I was in such a rush to get each one a sip of water and then into the warmth under the MHP, I didn't even count them (there were supposed to be 25, seemed about right). They are now quietly warming up, and the occasional strong one is popping out already for more water and some food. I also turned up the heat in the house they are in to help a bit.

Here they are warming up (with a few trolling around for feed):

Hello all! I have an incubation question, I think I may have done something wrong. Should I ask question here or start a new thread?

The ones in the center are turkey eggs :) I think Sally has me covered with white and olive eggs ;)
I sure does!!! Hi Jess!!
@MowgliMom HI!!!! Are you going to hatch some eggs? I am glad you are here regardless! You need more posts! Goodness! Chat with us! We promise not to bite too hard!
:frow :clap
Picked these up to test for hot spots in the new bator. Initially I'm impressed with how close they are aside from the one with the humidity being off by 5%. It should at least be good enough to ensure adequate circulation correct?? And yes that's inside a 4 season sun room that is apparently not very well insulated.
:yesss: the four pack off amazon? I was using them but switched again seemed the dang lcd screens would go out on me and only show some of the numbers, it was annoying! but they did last for several years!

Still better test them they could all be off 5 degrees..
yeppers, they will be tested I was just initially seeing how close they would actually read to each other.
let me know what you get!
Yes 4 pack off amazon. I have a brinsea spot check in my cart but I wanted to go ahead and get these to spread around inside for the initial testing phase. But I think I'm leaning more towards the thermoworks model @ChickenCanoe mentioned back awhile ago. Seems as though I recall the spot checks having some bad batches with battery issues??

Thank you kindly! First time using an incubator, usually use broodies. I have a GFQ Styrofoam still with a turner. I had gotten shipped eggs from fellow BYCer but the shipment was delayed, so we both expected poor viability. That was correct, none of them developed. I also included four of my own girls' fertile eggs in case we had a lone hatch from her stock. Mine have all developed well, and tomorrow is lockdown, day 18.

I just candled the eggs this morning, and the air cells don't look big enough. I was a jerk and didn't weigh them before I put them in, so I don't know the weight difference.

It's not a big deal if they don't hatch, but I'd like to at least learn. Is there anything I can do now? I had been running the humidity at 35%, but sometimes it got up to 40%. Our house is pretty dry right now.
TIMELINES PIPS ZIPS!!! & MARKING AIR CELLS DAY 18, DRAW DOWN, INTERNAL PIP, EXTERNAL PIP, and ZIPPING post #35770

Can you take pics of the eggs with air cells marked ? I agree, if you say they are still small dont up until you see some drawing down.... see info above/
