I have a question..... I am anxious to integrate my young pullets in with my older birds. The older birds are 5 months - 2 hens and 1 rooster. Plus 2 guineas- breeding pair also juvenile. My pullets are 10 weeks old but only 1/2 the size of the older ones. When can they must be one flock. I am nervous because I have seen older birds kill younger ones but when is it safe.

I must say the coolest thing besides fluffing up is that snood of theirs that they can make really long or really short while their eating. This boy eats out of my hands! I am happy to have a pair! and their kid who is sold but not picked up yet

This is a photo of one of my chicks.
All of them have this weird little bump on their leg-almost like a spur. They are only almost 4 weeks old, and I haven't seen this before on any of my other chicks before this batch. Is it a disease? Is it normal?
It's on both of the legs like right where a spur would grow. But I've had chicks that were roosters and none of them had it.
Tell me if y'all see it, and if not I can show y'all another pic.

Read back 71 posts would like to comment on all of them, but with my IPad it is hard to keep my place. There is some good butchering info, grinder for plexi glass for sure also best to cut chicken wire and hardware cloth. Lots of adorable baby chick picks. Only post I wasn't sure about was a t-shirt with a lie about a man that does not exist in nature ( crazy chicken man).

I should have gone home and laid down, but I was actually very productive and got my run fixed so I can leave my flock up while we are out of town (they normally free range). They were not happy tonight, but finally settled down and went to sleep inside the coop (they haven't done that in a good 6-8 months!) instead of on top of the coop or in a tree.

For those of you wondering, I don't know how a decaf drinker and a high octane drinker are going to get along. It will be a challenge for sure.

I'm not pleased with global warming/climate change. Warmest February on record, most days in February above 70 F shattered the old record. I wore shorts 8 days in February, in MISSOURI! That's just not right. I had a rash of mosquito bites yesterday and caterpillars are on the trees already.
The apricots are finished blooming and the fruit is growing. The peaches are in full bloom. The pear buds are opening. The apple and plum buds are swollen and about to open.
It will now be in the low 20s Saturday night. All that fruit will be lost.
Last year the same thing happened. All the fruit was growing and April 15 we had a huge freeze. Not a single piece of fruit survived.

@DwayneNLiz - I thought I had quoted you, but I lost it. I'm sure there were other things I was going to comment on, but... Regarding shots, Brooke was at the shelter for so long - 2 weeks short of a year - that she is due for her NEXT set of shots in a week or two (and I'm supposed to take them to the vet anyhow). It's the rabies shot that they want annually but really actually lasts 3 years, so it's not like she's uncovered if she's a few days late.

Wow we had quite the wind storm yesterday! Almost everyone was without power-except us and my husbands work

I was on the phone when I heard a huge crash. I thought trees came down on the coop or house. went outside to see some down in the woods but had fallen the opposite direction so I thanked God and went back inside.... Turns out the fire department was here for most of the night and one truck is still here this morning at the end of our property. The noise was trees that came down on the power wire like once before and caught the woods on fire!

Thankfully it was far enough away from the house and only did minimal damage before they got here and took care of the problem. Can't believe we still have power and a friendly reminder that things can always be worse so be thankful for what you have today and not worry about tomorrow

There are hot spots and cool spots all over the earth. Yeah, I know that the Larsen B ice shelf is shrinking rapidly.... But the west Antarctic ice sheet is growing. The fact of the matter is that even though the CO2 concentration in the air is increasing, as per the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii. the temperature changes from 1880-2000 are very, very small, and most of the change occurred in the early 1900's, before the carbon dioxide level had jumped significantly, which doesn't line up.

Because of the greenhouse effect, (NOT global warming, there's a difference in the terms) we know that significant carbon dioxide level increases will, in fact, produce a temperature change. The thing is, scientists don't know how much "significant increase" is... Would doubled have an effect? Tripled? Another thing to consider is that human CO2 output is approximately 3% of the natural processes that put CO2 into the air. Some may say that the carbon dioxide added by humans is just plain not significant compared to the CO2 added by natural happenings.

Today is do everything chores. Prepare brooder, haul a pick up load of sawdust, clean 3 coops, go to the feed store, get eggs, water everyone, check fence, scaveng left over cob corn for 3 coops and beef, take time to look at every critter for health check, deliver eggs to neighbor lady. Banti.. is this really you? How is it possible we can even remotely agree on anything?

I remember over my many decades (sigh).. Temps go up temps go down. Some winters are warm, some cold. Some years apples have apples some years the blossoms freeze.

I get a really "kick" out of one of the weather collection areas up here it use to be on a gravel road. about 100 yards off the road.. First they paved the road, and said that would not affect the readings, then paved the drive right up to the white box and said that would not affect the temps...


How dumb to they think we area?
