EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Help!!!! My nephew snuck into the room and took an quail egg out of lockdown and opened it up!!! Luckily it was by the aircell and the baby is moving around in there!! It's day 17. I've put some coconut oil on the membrane to stop it from getting dry and put it straight back in. I'm worried out of my mind

I don't know if something such as New Skin would work there or not, but for lack of a better idea I might be inclined to try it.

Quote: Wrong name, I guess; glad you were still around. This situation just gave me an idea. DW has a deal that resembles a small crock pot with melted wax in it. The idea is to dip the hands in it, then let the wax "set up" for a while before peeling it off. Supposed to relieve aching in the hands. I'm wondering if that would work on eggs in this scenario

I've used beeswax, clear nail polish and liquid skin to seal cracks in eggs. The only eggs that ended up hatching were the ones sealed with liquid skin.

One egg was dropped from about 3 feet and was 75% covered with cracks at day 7 and it hatched just fine. I did seal it immediately though.

Your wax application would probably be better than the one I tried though.

He's made a big hole in it so I've put coconut oil on the membrane and put it quickly back in before it got cold. It's due to hatch today and it's in the position so will just have to see

If it is due to hatch today why not just make sure the humidity is high and let it go. When you use a substance of any kind you run the risk of bringing something into the egg. Even coconut oil/grease off your fingers. If we cross our fingers maybe you will get lucky and it will just speed up the "delivery". Sort of like women going horseback riding at 8 months 4 weeks...

Good luck with whatever you do.

I think these other fixes are for when you have some incubation time left.

hopefully it'll be ok and hatch soon! Don't think I'll be sleeping tonight.

The best possible use of a bad rooster...Other than shipping to Iceland's free the rooster program. They need more wild roosters up there...:lau

 I accidentally gave her one of my purebred girls. So, she named it Abi. Abi is pretty shy, and was staying in the run alone when the others from me were allowed out today.
After a few hours, the original flock was allowed out to free range too. Immediately, the nasty rooster went over to mate with Abi. She immediately squatted for him. :gig I always did like the bad boys! And I'm usually alone too!
