EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Duck people how do you keep your ducklings area clean? My mom wanted ducks so bad that my dad bought 7 ducklings at TSC the other night and I am taking care of them for her but these things are messy!
I think the trick is having a bunch of small brooders instead of big one (Big ones are hard to clean) and having hay for bedding since It is easy to clean up, and havng there waterer be a plastic milk carton with a hole it. My brooder is a plastic tote with straw in it and a plastic milk carton for a waterer. Every day I put the ducklings outside in there pen and get a rake or pitchfork and take out he dirty hay and put in some new hay. I think having a brooder you can clean easily is the key. I used a big one with shavings (shavings are a pain) and It was so hard to clean that I would delay cleaning as long as I could (Which meant it was really stinky in the garage), and my waterer did not have much of a catch-tray. This time, brooding has been a piece of cake! (and a whole lot of

A cake pan and cooling rack inside a rubbermaid tub work well to help catch
excess water and feed for an easy clean up in the brooder. Its important to keep the brooder dry!

Cut jugs at the base level of the chicks neck so they can drink
and if they do get inside the jug it wont be over their heads.
Just big enough to get their head in and out comfortably.
And throw the lid out, DONT put it on the jug!

Make a new jug every week or as needed, Ducklings GROW FAST!

PS I LEARNED A GREAT TRICK...... KEEP THEIR FEED SEPARATE FROM THEIR WATER LIKE AT OPPOSITE ENDS, IT KEEPS CLEAN AND THE WATER WONT STINK!

nice chicks and broody! you travel far? anything new this summer? so fun, I dont have anyone to care for all these animals. That is a bummer about the roosters. the last image the blue chick on the right with the white chest is cool looking

Thanks! Yes, we go to Ireland in the Summer. My brother-in-law takes care of the hens for us, but he has kind of an irregular schedule so he wouldn't be able to put a rooster to bed and let him out in the morning. I console myself with the fact that we're moving to Ireland next year though, and then I'll finally be able to keep roosters. :)

That chick is a mottled blue Orpington. I am about 80% sure it is a male but I am keeping my fingers crossed! Every time we get a blue chick it always turns out to be male though.
