EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Jace turns two today... And just like last year, she's broody...

I'm thinking to just let her set.

So, i've introduced hand-raised baby chicks to my flocks once they were a few weeks old and the other chickens stared at them in a juvie pen for a while to get used to them being around - but how do I integrate a broody with some babies back into her flock with out getting them killed. I've never put baby chicks out with adult sized chickens before. Will she attempt to protect them? They free range in a contained area, I would think they'd do okay together as long as she kept them safe. I just don't know if she would? I was worried if I moved her, she might just abandon them out in the yard.

I've tried that once and, I've seen it work for others. If they are valuable chicks I wouldn't risk it. For me and the Easter chicks, I'll keep them separate. I'll probably raise this bunch away from the hen. I need the coop space she and the chicks are in. Today should be last of hatch.

Just bantam cochin and I think a cochin/polish cross.

Not special chicks by any means. I'm of the "if they live, they live" mentality at this point. I have enough chickens if the babies get themselves killed, or mom needs to learn to nurture them they'll figure it out.

I have like 30 more eggs in my incubator due to hatch. I just haven't done anything with a broody before, so this was my first attempt to see how it worked. If it doesn't, then I'll keep them inside and use my grow-out pens. I just couldn't put her in the grow out pen atm because I have a batch of chicks in there, along with my geese/ducks now.

Fun what eggs will she be setting? My neighbors hen is still setting some of mine, with the promise I'll take whatever she does want.
Blue egg from an unknown hen, some sultan x whatever rooster covered them, and some of her own eggs from the fridge.

Same problem here with too many except these are ones I'd like to keep. She killed one of them I think when it came out from under her and tried to get back she may have thought intruder and that was it. Doing fine so far last night with the rest.

I put 3 babies under her, and left her in a dog crate while she got to know them for a few days. Once she knew who they were, that's when I put them out. LOL

The rooster's been chasing her back to her babies everytime she wanders too far away.... so i'm pleased with him.
