EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

At the doctor's office - there was an emergency so it's taking forever. On my phone - I don't see how those of you who are phone-only do BYC without going blind!!!!!

I have 4 chicks that I just cleaned up with pasty butt. 3 are a few days old, one is a silkie chick that's about 3 weeks old. Any suggestions for prevention?

Prevention can be probiotics (as mentioned before), and ensuring they don't get either chilled or overheated. But what's important to keep in mind is that once it happens it tends to recur, so keep checking them. I have heard that putting a little olive oil or Vaseline around and below the vent after cleaning them off can help prevent recurrences because it's harder for the poop to stick to the down.

Thank you. He is literally chick number 6 that the kids and I have hatched. As odd as it was, I thought perhaps there was a logical explanation...

Many threads have no posts for long periods of time, this one is busy. As others have said, if no one has seen it before, they likely won't respond - I don't myself. I agree with the one who thought it might be a bit of membrane or other hatch gunk - but very glad that there was a normal eye under there. (Missing eyes tend to go with brain and skull problems are are often ultimately fatal.)

@ChickenCanoe Interestingly, I am working my way through the REI list of topics. I just haven't gotten to the compass and using it with the maps yet. I have been concentrating on gear, and packing methods recently

Dax, I enjoyed your initial itinerary- wish I was going with you! The compass I have is a Suunto (sp?) - on a rectangular clear base, so easy to use on a map, but not so large you can't pop it out. I actually use it all the time because I'm mildly right- left dyslexic with directions, and it keeps me from turning the wrong way on trails sometimes (or reassures me if I start to worry that I'm going the wrong way). I think that provided it works, the most important thing is to get familiar with it so you're not using it for the first time when stressed out if you're lost. (You probably already know that...)

I think with the way you're travelling, the type of compass isn't a big concern. You're likely to only need it if you get lost.

Help please!

My lone surviving turkey egg has pipped and started to zip, but hasn't made any progress in several hours. Membrane looks tan. Should I try to moisten? Other chicken chick has hatched, and other chicken chick has a pip. Tomorrow is day 28.

@mlm Mike @daxigait and who else has kept goats forever?

I had the farrier out to look at Beaux's hooves and try to shape them up for me. He worked on it a but but said he's never seen anything quite like it. He said Beaux is walking on the balls (?) of his hooves and stands like a horse does when it has foundered. His back hooves are the worst. I took more pics today, hoping we can get some suggestions? He said he's going to do some research, and that he'll try anything that is suggested. He didn't charge me for the trim.

Both back hooves.
