EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Do you just want them for broody hens or are you going to show/breed?
I don't need them for broodiness, and I don't intend to breed. I just *like* the silkies for pets, and want enough girls/flock big enough to replace the silkies every 3-4 years as needed.

Despite only having a couple girls out there, the roosters don't fight over them and get along well with each other and let the kids handle them all.

Have you checked your local craigslist? Lots of chicks this time of year, I've seen a couple silkie chick ads already, though they still won't be sexed.
Honestly, I don't want to take chicks from places who aren't NPIP and i'm fairly certain they are clean. We have a lot of merek's and black head down here, and I don't want to risk exposing my birds, since I'm clean right now.

I could handle hatching eggs, since they are quarantined for the first 6 weeks inside after hatching.

Mornin Catherine how are your babies?
My magpie trio are doing good, but it seems I'm going to go from trio to solo with them, Two are sounding like boys...

As for the ones in the 'bator (Which are 5 now, another hatched last night) they are happily playing "sibling soccer", "bite the fan" and "who's going to be king of the mountain that's really a bowl with a damp clothe in it put in here for humidity"

I now have 5 out, one pipped, and 9 that either haven't pipped or the soccer players have moved so I can't tell.

They are also sold out, at least until June, but there's a waiting list, and may still not be available. Dang.

I guess I should get more hatching eggs, and hope for more pullets?
sounds like you need eggs, ravyn has gorgeous silkies and ships them really well too
