EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Lots of nice colors in the list though.
I assume you know how to do a search in a PDF document.

Should bring a pretty penny. You selling by the pound or just as a brood cow?

This isn't my quote but -
"I'd sooner be a small bird in a hawk filled wood than a caged hen on an egg farm."

Bonus!

There are worse habits.

That's cool. Thanks for posting. I should buy kelp in bulk. I buy huge bags at the Asian/Latin seafood city market for about 5 bucks and it lasts close to 2 months. I use some in my egg drop soup too.

That's a good product. Similar list to what is in the nutridrench. Nutridrench has more minerals as well as lysine and methionine.
Just as a brood cow. I think maybe 15-1700?

no heat for them?
Nope. Well, I did have some the first day since I was going to be out of town and hadn't tried this before, but apart from that they've had a wool hen inside the garage where it is somewhat warm. They seemed fine with it, were as actice as those with heat lamp, and sticking my hand in the wool hen it's pretty hot. Unfortunately a dog destroyed it so I have to build another, so for now they have just a lo of hay, but they seem fine, they spend most of the day outside in a kiddie pool.

balanced ration with supplements
is destructive.
Thanks for the link.
That's what I'm talking about.
I did have a conversation with a nutrition scientist at Purina and questioned him about the nutrients lost in the fines at the bottom of the feeder that chickens ignore. He said they consider that in their calculations and bump up the supplements in the manufacture process to compensate.

I've been out of the market far too long to have any idea. You live in cattle country so people down there would know.

I think they lie about this,

If you are feeding a pellet or crumbles this might be true. If you are feeding a mash I can see the birds picking out the "chicken Crack" and leaving the rest. I fool them by taking the "fines" they leave making a "mush" like corn meal mush, Scramble the eggs that have broken mix in the shells and feed it to them again..

I bring it out in tht bright orange bowl they get table scraps in, so they think they are eating what we eat....

Teach them to waste feed!

Chatty bunch this morning. I got caught up, left for a meeting with the boss and came back to another 100+ post unread.

@SallySunshine

I suspect you are correct with the humidity. I was leaning towards the possibility of pullet eggs being the cause yesterday. However, my broody started her hatch yesterday and is having substantially better success. She was sitting on a dozen and has at least 8 out(from the same assortment that I had in the bator). I suspect she might have a few more but she's grumpy and I ain't pushing my luck.

:celebrate and no brooder hassle ;)
