A little advice please! I will try and keep it short. I have a blue ameraucana who pipped the wrong end of the egg(shipped egg) at day 19, and zipped itself free today (day 20), but when it kicked out of the egg, the yolk was not fully absorbed and there was a lot of bleeding. As soon as I noticed at my hourly check, I took it out and the inner membrane was still attached with a chunk of shell. I dabbed flour on it and got the bleeding to stop. Removed the chunk of shell. The chick is in a food storage bowl in the bator, but I'm not sure if it's going to make it. It is breathing shallowly and barely moves if I tap on the bator window. The chick was pretty big for the size shell it was in, and the egg also had a saddle shaped air cell. This was my first time with shipped eggs, and I don't think I like doing it. Is there anything I need to do for the chick, or just let it be? It's been 5 hours since I found it like this, and the yolk seems to be absorbing, and the membrane attached looks like it's drying out some, but the chick is still just laying there.
It is likely resting and if the yoke is absorbing that is progress. You have helped it and given it a chance. The waiting and hoping is just hard.A little advice please! I will try and keep it short. That is a nice broody. Good luck.I stuck an extra 8-9 chicks under my broody who already had 3 babies she accepted... so far, she's allowed all of them to hang out under her. They are about 3? days old.
She seems fine with them. We'll give her a couple days before turning her loose again with all her new babies.
