Long day I am whipped and sore. Picking up chicks in the morning.
@ChickenCanoe thanks for the info on the tough grass. They will be in chicken tractors due to the amount of predators. There is years of tall dead grass that is basiclly straw. Hope they turn it into muclh like in there current run. Mainly it's an excuse to order a twice the meaties I normally do I will put all my current chickens out there over the summer too. The main part I want to do is 1/2 acre.
if u put a bowl of water out the mice will climb in and drown I have seen 15 meet their demise this way. And I had them getting into my gravity feeders and building nests I put cayenne pepper mix it in with the feed no more problem. Mice have the heat receptors like humans chickens do not
I stuck an extra 8-9 chicks under my broody who already had 3 babies she accepted... so far, she's allowed all of them to hang out under her. They are about 3? days old.
She seems fine with them. We'll give her a couple days before turning her loose again with all her new babies.
From skimming, I'm going to offer the following information.
It can take 24 hours to finish zipping.
If the chick looks to have foot problems, don't worry right away. It will sometimes straighten out within a day. If not, buy it some Keds. Or, make it a shoe.![]()
Quote: I don't know anyone who needs an extra rooster. But... hey, any chance you want an Olive Egger rooster? He's sweet and beautiful and big, half Lavender Ameraucana, half Blue Copper Marans. Will likely be eaten as I'm full up on boys...
(So begins the season of getting rid of roosters - it'll be zucchini next!)
Have a great time! Haven't asked in ages, but the Kenpo reminds me - how is that ankle doing?Kenpo time. You guys have a great evening.
Quote: Agree - just getting on, but I don't have anything to add to MC and Dax's comments. Sounds like you've done the right things, now it's up to the chick/nature.![]()

Back inside - I was able to get some more good work done, but still more to do. I have to work part of the day tomorrow (was hoping to take the entire day off, but there's a meeting I have to supervise). Hoping I can finish the housing up over the weekend...
(Boy, I'm beat!!!!)
