Twin doelings for Abigail!
Hey, all - Kassaundra has some "toddler" photos of her latest scaleless Fm chicken up over here, including his current clothes (he's still small enough to wear just a modified sock, though she says he's a drama queen about it).
Just wanted to pop in and say thank you all! My little turkey chick is doing very well, as are the other two that hatched. Also, got my new incubator today so I won't have any more temperature fluctuations from now on.
Turkey chick is sleeping on the stuffed sloth, to the right.
I really liked my dark Welsummer eggs and wanted more dark layers. Researching all the dark layers, I found Marans, Barnevelders, Langshans, Empordanesa and Penedesenca. I considered Marans but they are pretty common and I'm not very common so I wanted something more obscure. It took me a year to find my original stock.
From there it didn't take very long before they became my favorite of all the 30 breeds I've had. Through attrition, I didn't replace any of the breeds I lost till now I only have the BPs, plus 3 olive eggers that are daughter and granddaughters of an Ameraucana that was my oldest hen when a mink killed her.
I don't mind at all. The Missouri River was in flood stage during the race. The wing dikes were submerged and buoys would occasionally pop up out of the water unexpectedly. There were some channels that would open up that looked like the main channel at night and once I hit a dead end and had to paddle back upstream over a mile to get back on course.
The last 2 nights, the huge trees lining the river became cartoon characters. There was a big power plant on the shore of the river all lit up but the more I paddled, the farther away it seemed to get like it was hovering the river just ahead of me. I thought it was a flying saucer.
I miscounted bridges. There were two bridges close together and I thought there was only supposed to be one. I had no idea how, but now I thought I was lost and in another part of the state. It was around midnight. Just before the first bridge I passed a mile marker that I couldn't read but I thought if I could paddle back to it and the number made sense, I would know if I was where I was supposed to be.
I started paddling upstream under that last bridge but got swept downstream. The river seemed to ebb and surge. All of a sudden, in my addled state, I thought the next bridge was a dam and that I thought I was going to get sucked into the turbines. In a panic I paddled hard upstream and running out of steam, I steered the canoe into the woods and hung onto a tree. This lasted close to 2 hours. I thought it was a government conspiracy. This whole time, I was less than a mile from the end of the race.
