Morning all...

Been a long week already and it's only Wednesday.

In exciting news, we have two pips in the classroom eggs, it is driving me CRAZY that I am not there! I hear random peeping everywhere I go.

Morning peeps,
Hope all are well.

Looks like it's time for me to go predator hunting again. Spring brings out the hungry animals and looks like they are coming for my flock.

Lost a hen and a rooster Thursday night, set up and waited fri night, had a fox come in right about dusk. Shot at him, didnt get a clean kill, which really bugs me due to the fact that I don't miss. Was hoping I had at least scared him away for a bit. Lost another hen and a rooster yesterday afternoon. This seemed different though, no feathers, no sign of a struggle, just gone. I could tell something was different when I went to lock up due to the fact birds were all scattered and over half were not in the coop well past usual roost time. When I came out I had onesies and twosies come running to the coop. Was hoping maybe the rooster at least was hidden up somewhere so I did a walk around this morning before leaving for work hoping to hear a crow or see him pacing the coop door trying to get to his ladies but it was silent. Put out the trail cam and realized the batteries were dead.

@MotorcycleChick Thank you for the Java.
Yikes! I hope you find/get it. For the second time I found a baby possum in the Cream Legbar coop (my oldest coop) at dusk. He was at the waterer. Wasn't able to catch him (was envisioning tossing him a great distance by his tail onto a neighbor's property), but I need to do a check for access points.

(When I was typing this, the roosters went berserk outside - I went out, nothing, so likely a hawk. I am so pleased with how the roosters protect my entire flock by warning each other. Although sometimes Dumbledore sets them all off when one of his girls sings her egg song.

@Fire Ant Farm

You working off plans for your tractors, or just winging it?
Thinking about trying one, so the birds can "get out"
without actually getting out (and staying out of DW's precious flower beds)
Plans - Stress free tractor plans. Here's the link:

https://farmmarketingsolutions.com/stress-free-chicken-tractor-plans/

If you decide to buy the plans (not that expensive, and he's supporting his young family in part from these), I can PM you details of my modifications - most importantly, I created an elevated platform in the back with roosts, which increases floor space, allows additional shade/protection, and since there's no ladder, they just jump/fly up, an added level of protection from flood or nighttime predators (found a family of raccoons in the GNH coop one night when the automatic door malfunctioned - got there early enough that the chickens were safe above, and the raccoons were in the food below). (Also, there's an error in the cut list, though I bought my version of the plans a while ago, so he might have fixed it.) I also attached the conduit higher up, which makes it easier to walk inside (done' like the plans, I have to duck and I'm 5'6"). The lap joints are a pain, but are really important - they allow the frame to flex over uneven ground and still stay in contact with the ground.

I have made another modification now, adding additional uprights to allow the tractor to be disassemble into panels (plus top) - not easily, but possible. I have 3 in use as permanent "coops", 2 with growouts in them, and 4 more in production now.

@kwhites634 - I would add - if you're not looking for something for them to sleep in, you can skip the upper platform and it will be lighter. I can move it ok as it, but it was easier to move when built without the platform, as you might imagine. Flexes well as it moves. If you are very careful, you can move it with them in it. Used a boat/dock rope for the puller, and mower wheels on the back.

DW was gunning for chicken dinner yesterday. Guess her bed of daffodils disappeared. Don't know what her problem was the things only bloom for a little bit. They didn't eat them just tore them up a little bit and destroyed the flowers.

LOL, sounds like my husband
he always asks if i want bark mulch in the gardens i always say 'no'
he then proceeds to mulch the gardens and gets mad at me when the chickens throw it all over the yard
congrats! are you going to be able to afford the feed and vet care?
