EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Yes very assorted as these were in the bushes and I've no idea who laid what. They are all from the meat mutt rooster though
yummy mutt meat lol

I can't find the stupid turkey. :barnie
oh no!!!

My poor chickens were standing out there, while we hosed them down, i thought one of my polish crested was going to die, she's not doing very well. She's literally been laying in the pool of water, trying to cool off, and there's nothing else I can do to help her, she wouldn't lay on the block of ice i put out there.... dunno why.

I NEVER sweat, but it was so hot yesterday with the humidity, I was sweating, it was the oddest feeling. ^.^
:hugs hope they all did ok :fl

The broody hen had her chicks 50 feet from any water supply in the middle of all the hens and rooster. Not good. Moved them to a quieter area even though I promised myself that I would let let it take its own course.
Anyone know how to get pictures to go where you want them to be rather than at the top of post above quotes?
fun assortment!! Congrats!

Dog killed the ONLY rooster I was going to keep. I'm mad enough to quarter and roast that beast.

On the upside, I have external pips.
 bad dog

EWWWW I had an egg explode in my incubator, and it didn't stink..... ^.^ I had to wash off the eggs it effected.
ewwwwwwwwww :hugs

Unfortunately, she was in the pile of lumber and wire from my run that collapsed. The duckling was chasing after her, and got his head stuck in chickenwire. He was dangling, and kicking his wittle webbies. Wooking so coot! ( :lau added for Banti) I'm hoping he doesn't do it again. I'll obviously try to find somewhere else to put the wire.

poor little guy, looks like the turkey is a good mo though

What a day. All done - culled all 10 today. For some reason I decided to dry pluck the Naked Necks. I've done it before - it's not that much longer than scalding, and I am bad about "cooking" the skin a bit when scalding. But I think I must have done it before on younger birds with fewer feathers - these were crosses with the New Hampshires, and had what I would judge as more feathers than usual NN heterozygotes have (there were even a few hairs). So, did I stop? No. :he I stubbornly persisted in dry plucking six of them before finally giving up (because a thunderstorm was coming and it was getting dark), and so I breezed through the final four by skinning. Just took some naproxen for my shoulder and wrist - mental note, next time, when plucking (not skinning), no more than about 4 or 5 a day....

Managed to finish and scrub down everything before it started thundering. Then with the last shred of energy I had, I went to get take out at my favorite old fashioned Italian restaurant. Let's hope I can stay awake enough to eat and read back... :th
:hugs youre crazy

I don't need more ducks!!
did you really say that??!!???

Finally feeling better. The last couple of days, well I have had fevers, been vomiting, etc
But, look who has come into my life;

Yep, not chicken related at all. Sorry.
still super cute :hugs hope you are feeling better
It seems to be the worst hatch ever!
From 18 eggs at the beginning
At lockdown:
10 completely clear!
2 blood rings
5 are undetectable (first time dealing with marans View attachment 1021973) so they go to lockdown
And only one is fully developed! :he
The breeders that gave me the eggs told me that the fertility is not good, but the best that I can hope is 5.5% success? That is the lowest ever!:hit :hit
:hugs so sorry ;hugs

Mother puss bucket!!!!!!!!!!

$%#&*^ %^&^%$## ^&% %$$$###

I've been up the past hour and a half with severe pain in my hand and wrist. I've been pacing around yelling obscenities, having taken a big dose of naproxen and smeared the whole thing with Voltaren gel to no effect. Now I'm watching the original Star Wars movie while pacing the den and muttering bad words.

Remind me of this next time I want to dry pluck 6 chickens. :he

Sorry, just wanted some company and to vent. (The cats don't seem sympathetic, they just think I'm weird.)
gadzooks! you sound like mel :hugs :hugs

OK, well, they just blew up the Death Star. I'm wide awake now, but wrist pain has subsided a lot, so I'm going to go lay down and try to catch a few more hours before it's time for chores.
i have a story about the death star

Hello! I wanted to quickly ask for some advice here

Ok so last week one of my dearly beloved pet chickens went broody and has been sitting on 10 (that was the last count I have a feeling there's been more sice then) eggs and been faithfuly sitting on them sice sometime last week. It may seem like everythings going fine but I'm sad to say it's not! I also have 2 white chantaclairs (I probly spelt that wrong) who ALSO what to sit in the same nest as Rainbow (the chicken mentioned at the start) I've been trying to keep the two hens away but it's getting insane what thier doing to Rainbow (BTW in my profile pic the black chicken on the right is Rainbow). Now another problem, Rainbow is a disabled chicken she lost use of her right leg sometime last year in a mating acsedent with one of our aggresive roos (Who died for the crime) Rainbow has troble properly sitting on the nest as well as getting in and out of the nesting box (When she is kicked out or has to go for food and water) whenever I'm out by the coop I always check on her.

Do you guys have any advice on this for me? I really would aprechate any help I can get since this is only my 3rd time with a broody and Rainbows first time doing this.
did you move her??

Hi everyone! Chickens get their summer bath this week. Then a dose of ivermectin for any parasites. Am I the only one who bathes their birds who doesn't plan on showing them?
yer crazy too

Oh Ya right I for got I can do that, OK I'll skip to the question

OK, do a couple of days I ago I was going to collect the eggs, And as I was getting then I notcied our disabled chicken Rainbow (A black Americauna) was on the nest, no biggie, except I saw her there this morning when I went to go and let the chickens out, she was broody, so I did the unual and left that nesting box alone, BUT it was the fave one of the flock, so she got booted off often, and my pet chicen Lollipop (Same breed as Rainbow, except she's fatter, Rainbow's just a scrawny little bird) and when I found Lollipop on the nest, I booted her off of it, only to find one of the eggs broken under her, so I thew it out and threw some shaving over the yolkeness (I just made up a word) so that Rainbow would want to go back on, and she did, a couple of hours later, I went back to the coop to check up on Rainbow (Beacuse 2 of our hens , Lollipop and a white Chataclir that has a name, but we have 3 and they are so alike I often can't tell them apart, they had been diving for the nest non-stop) and I found Lollipop on the nest, so I booted her off, and ANOTHER egg was brocken, and as I pcked it up to thow it out, the yolk fell out, and she dived for it, It sounds like egg eating, but I can hold eggs up to her, put them under her, I have a diffrent theory, I think Lollipop is crushing the eggs by acedent, and then smelling the yolk and attenpting to eat it, beacuse when I grab the eggs, only then does she notce it, and then go for it, and also, the member (Or whatever it is the holds the yolk in its roundness) was sitll there, the yolk was unbroken.

I need new chicks, and I can't get the other hens to leave Rainbow alone, and I don't think Lollipop is an eggeater, I've seen that before.

What do I do?

That was huge.....
are you two sisters??

so would the sheep pen work for Rainbow?
probably

I miss Sally and ChickenCanoe!
we all do sally has goatlings now though

You should go look at the Old Fashioned Broody thread I linked earlier. Many folks recommend moving them at night.

Do I need to tell you to stop candling, young lady?!

Joyous, joyous day here. As always, the day after culling a lot of extra cockerels is always so peaceful in the chicken yard. Everyone has fresh water in scrubbed waterers (I have hard water, and it leaves a build up), and all feeders refilled. It's only up to 88F today, so everyone thinks it's delightful in comparison to the day before. And best of all, all the laying hens got the organs left over from culling as treats. There's nothing quite like watching otherwise sedate grown up chickens playing keep away with chicken hearts. :lau

Puppy was a little piggy, as always. She was out of the coop, so I hand fed her some, then when I put the pan into the coop, she jumped back in to have more.

Time to start in on the chicken stock.

love puppy :love

Puppy says "Hi!" She kept me company while I scrubbed the scale off the waterers.

I want puppy babies. :love

I think I left them in for 35ish... Not 70.
i know someone who has possible puppy babies :plbb

You should see Muffin, one of the S&G NN pullets. She talks to me, and loves sitting on my lap. 100% precious and sweet, and also happens to be huge. Can't wait for her babies!!!!

awwwww where are pictures of this bird??

Well, terrible terrible night last night. Maximus (Maxy--the Joey) passed on. He really was just a carcass.....no fat on him so it was extra hard to keep him warm, and that lead to his death. I tried so hard with him and was feeding him every 3 hours morning and night, he was so small. Poor bub.
And.......if we already think that?

:hugs Hope you will start feeling better soon, and about the Joey pics-----i would have loved to. :(

Now, this is a dangerous question. How many ducks have ya got?

Can't wait to see your baby duck pics. Considering your avatar looks like an older duckling.....
:hugs so sorry you lost him :hugs
but thats really cool that you do animal rehab/rescue

Ok so I have eggs in my home made incubator. It's already day 23 and they haven't hatched. My humidity was on 50 because I couldn't raise it no matter what I did. I tried putting the at cloth and everything. I'm scared they might be dead. Is there any way I could tell without moving the eggs?
candle it, any update???

OFf to SA! Be home this afternoon guys!
:frow any news for us yet??? :pop

Sad day for me beautiful doeling Bree was dead when I went out to give the girls their morning bottles. Such a loss. She had beautiful confirmation and personality.
:hugs so sorry dax :hugs

Work is OK, it is the sick and birthing animals plus fencing that has been keeping me. That and conditioning for my trip.
how is conditioning going? and your ankle??

I found Sally
She's covered up in goat kids
:love and theyre cute too!!!

First, let me just say my grandma and my husband both think I should compromise on trigger times and do it at like 4am thursday morning so it's half-way between what I want, and waht my doctor wants.

I have 1 18mm egg, and 3-5 16mm Eggs, estrogen levels are 1100 roughly.

I was told I could trigger tonight, or take 75more of the meds and trigger tomorrow, but not thursday. I was told if I wanted to trigger thursday, I would have to make another 9 hour round trip adventure to the dr's tomorrow, in order to "wait that long" to trigger.???

Their excuse? That i might hyper stimulate and estrogen would go too high. I'm lower than I was at my last trigger (which was 1825.) and I was on the meds 3 days longer than this time... so I feel like I at LEAST need to go a day or two longer... I wanted to trigger when an egg was at least 20mm - which thursday would be right around the time.

They won't let me wait till thursday, because I won't come in tomorrow to scan/labs??? But if I can trigger tomorrow night, why can't it wait until thursday lunchtime roughly? Like, my gut is telling me thursday is when I *should* be triggering, but they won't let me "go that long" if I don't come in tomorrow.

They didn't sound confident in their decisions when I talked to them on the phone it was all like "you can trigger tonight, or take another 75ish of the meds, and trigger tomorrow night and come back monday."

If I still can take more meds, before the trigger, why would they have me trigger tonight if "I felt like it?"

Like... my gut tells me thursday. They don't want to let me go to thursday if I don't come in tomorrow, but when I offered to drive up thursday, they also told me they wouldn't let me wait that long in case I needed to trigger tomorrow night anyways.

Sigh. I feel like I can't win and I don't understand exactly why tomorrow matters so much in the whole scheme of things. If they were going to let me wait till thursday if I come up tomorrow, why not just let me trigger thursday? If they want me to trigger tomorrow, why did they want me there tomorrow if I can just trigger tomorrow night?

Like... it just doesn't feel right to do it tonight, and obviously didn't look promising to them, either or they wouldn't have told me to use more meds tonight and then trigger tomorrow...

I'm not the type of person to lie to my doctor, which is why my husband suggested a compromise and do it "super late after midnight" so we compromise on doctors orders, and what my gut's telling me to do :(

the nurse wouldn't even try to compromise with me about triggering thursday unless I made a second trip up there tomorrow, and I just can't do it. My kids can't do it, I can't do that drive 2 days in a row with out putting my life at risk, it's just too far and too many hours staring at bright roads that make my eyes tired. I need a day break inbetween to be safe on the road. They just don't seem to understand how hard these drives are for those of us who have to travel so far. :(

I tried to compromise with them and say I'd come back up thursday morning first thing, but that wasn't an acceptable answer to them either :(

Will do readback later Just wanted to say hi :hugs thought I did great in therapy and as i was walking out hand and arm went crazy :hit at least it was witnessed and documented:( Have to check the birds and not much of anything else.
