My EEs are the same way. They're smart enough to get under the cover of the shrubs if something's amiss from above. Of all the chickies I've lost to predators...EEs were not one of the breeds. All things considered.... it's been good for me and the kids to see how often they actually die, because we got really lucky with our first few batches of chicks raising them. I kept them in the house and then in pens they absolutely could not escape from, and we've done our best to fix the old turkey pen into a grow out pen that they can't get out of, but iI've still had smaller ones escape... and then you saw that fiasco when we got a flash flood and it wiped out half my grow out pen before I even know it was going to rain like that!
We had shelters for them, but only a couple of the birds were smart enough to use it. So... you can offer them food, water and shelter, and if they want to stand in the rain and die.... LOL
My EE chickens are very bright and never go in the horse pen, dog runs, or mess with the canal where racoons and othe predators might live. They stay close to home and are in long before dusk.
The sex link chickens on the other hand... not so bright. And this last batch of EE chicks I raised, they haven't been as bright as their parents. so, we will see what happens. I've had really good luck with some of my breeds of birds, it's almost like they go through this "teenager" phase where they think they are invincible. haha
