EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Well, first day of vacation here (though I had an interview in the morning). I was actually quite productive - got a lot of yard work done throughout the day. Turned out that it got up to 100F, so while I was generally ok, I had to stop around 5PM. Banti, re: temps - always so interesting to see. I was sitting outside watching everyone when it had hit 100F (I had given them fresh cool water an hour to two before that). Not in crisis, but panting and unhappy or dug down into the bedding or under deep shade structures to keep cool. I stayed outside in my hammock chair to watch them. When it had gotten down to about 97F (around 7pm), I felt like it was downright COOL compared to earlier, and the chickens were acting that way as well - like "97F? Oh, that's NOTHING!". So it's all about adaptation...

That being said, updated forecast is 103F for tomorrow, so I'm glad I'm on vacation so I can swap out their water for cool water as needed and spray the ground as well.

And for a little context... Last night I was going through unanswered threads, and there was one form a person in Chandler, Arizona. First post on BYC and a sad one - lost two 11 month old pullets to heat. It was 123F. I really need to stop complaining NOW...
123°F!?

Guess I won't complain about it hitting 70something....

I can't imagine what 100°F feels like, let alone 123°F.

123F is likely incompatible with life for chickens - if it were me, the chickens would be indoors at those temps. If I ever raise rabbits, I fear they will have to be indoors because OUR temps are almost incompatible with life for outdoor rabbits. :(

In my experience, at ~120-130F, it's too hot to get the warning signals to GET INSIDE RIGHT NOW. It's like your body doesn't even know how to process it. It's very dangerous.

Incredible...

Hard to believe places exist where it gets that hot.

I mean, I've been in Cali before... But not when it hit anything close to that.

I have the same reaction the you tell me how cold it gets where you are. :lau
:plbb

Silly. It's not that cold here, actually---for most of the winter, it stays above negative temps in daytime, unlike other spots.

I had two bunnies I lost to heat about three or four years ago. Dumb me didn't pay attention to the forecast and left real early in the a m for a kitchen manager meeting. Of course we were inside all day so did not know till I left it got up to 110 that day. They had water and shade and stuff but it was just too darn hot. I usually let them camp out under my deck when it was gonna be that hot for the day but didn't see it coming this time till it was too late :hit
