My first Buck was a boer mix... Bam bam..
Oh, nice. I thought he looked a little Boerish. Our current buck is a Boer Kiko cross. He's a big fella, about 200lbs. He's usually pretty decent tempered.

Remember the clothes brushes with the end of the long handle scooped out for a shoehorn? Had one & loved it; no idea whatever happened to it.
Now I keep two wooden back scratchers handy; one upstairs in my bedroom, one downstairs at the end of the couch. The handles aren't scooped, but they work just fine, and very little bending...none at all if I'm sitting down
patent leather shoes.... aw... the good ole days.. I think I'll mosey down Woolworth's and grab me a pop at the soda fountain.

Ever go to a diner with the little juke boxes on the table in each booth, so you could select a song & never leave the table?

My pop had a long wooden spoon he sanded to an edge.

I probably went 30-40 years w/o a pair of shoes on my feet; didn't even own a pair. Boots; nothing but boots. Dress Wellingtons for church & work, Justins for riding, working dogs, cleaning stalls, hunting, fishing, whatever.

We all have our different ideas on right and wrong. If I were to listen to the woman that I got my ducks from, I am doing everything wrong with everything down to my hermit crabs. Ralph he says that the only thing I'm doing wrong with my ducks is keeping them alive.
So Dax is the only one really scaring me. I am not ignoring her!

What I thought 7-8 years ago.
Goats are as cheap as dogs. $40 was average around here for a pygmy of either sex. Vaccinate once per year. They are browsers. They prefer to sleep elevated.
My late brother-in-law had goats. I was used to them jumping the fence only when no one was around, but staying close. They would always return to the barn at night.
Now I'm understanding that they need additives and medicine weekly?
I get hoof trimming. Especially here. The buildings are on cement pads, but I'm sure I'd have to trim their feet.

Do they need all of the things that you talk about if they are kept clean?

:lau Because I'm quiet anymore! I miss playing Marco Polo, and smacking Chaos. He'd shake his bunny butt, and I'd smack him more. We would freeze people's computers...
Most of the time if they have dry places to be with a bit of monitoring, good feed, free choice mineral and baking soda they do well. The biggest issues are watching for the common worms (Barberpol and tape) by watching eyelids, and coccidia when it is wet. The babies I brought in from elsewhere and that is always a risk as bottle kids are so fragile. Freak accidents are just that, and anaplasmosis is just rare so since I am new to goats (3yrs) I didn't know that it existed and can mimic coccidia until it was too late. The vaccines like CDT CL are cheap and once a year. The vast majority of my goats have only ever had vaccines and wormer which I only give when they show symptoms to avoid the growing resistance. The peak is Memorial to Labor Day.
They entirely eliminated the need for a brush hog on my place this year (year two with access). I used to need it two or three times a year. The blackberry briars are 98% gone, the buck brush is gone and most weeds. I have some rag weed, but much less than before much to my relief. They are not that bad and some breeds particularly cross breeds are quite hardy. I would not trade the for fear of just having to keep an eye on a few things. A few basic meds on hand and you are good to go with most situations.
