EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I've never lived in a house that has a main shut off. Always had to get down in the man hole thingy with a special tool called a thingamaBobby. And no. . the city doesn't like us folks having those thing a ma Bobby dealy jigs. They want you to call them instead so your whole house can flood before they get there.
I Bought one of those from Orchard Supply and Hardware. I did make sure the last time I used it that the City workers were finished with working on a broken main down the street though.

Shaw just jogged my memory. Bear in mind, I've only encountered this once, but here goes:
Somewhere, probably out near the road, there should be a cap, similar to a manhole cover only a lot smaller around. It should be at or slightly below the surface (if dirt & grass have mostly covered it). Removal of that cap should give you access to the plumbing below, which contains the main shutoff. I believe, however, that a specialized tool is needed to adjust the main. You would probably need a permit, if you are allowed to do anything to it at all. Utility companies normally take a dim view of anyone other than their own people messing with their stuff.

You trying to fix your kitchen sink? You shouldn't need to shut off the main; there should be a shutoff valve under the sink.
It does have a "shut off" for the hot water. It only slows the flow. The handyman gave up trying to actually fix the sink last year when he had the same problem.
Yes, it's been leaking for over a year. It's just now bad enough for me to know something has to give. I finally realized I know how to fix it myself... except for the shut off.
You can make a highly accurate thingamabobby with a piece of pipe a welder and a side grinder...

Or so I have been told..
I actually have that equipment.

It isn't this

If it's just the hot side and it's a single faucet on the sink you can turn the hot water heater tank off. Problem with older valves they seldom work right again after turning on and off. Then you will need the main valve at the road. We don't have to get a permit to do the valve at the road.
