EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Anyone want to play guess that gender!?!
These chicks are 5 weeks old. All are purebred orps. I color coded them with head spots, so I can keep track of them. It also makes it fun when people come to buy chicks. :lol:More than once, people made comments about how they never knew that chickens came in such pretty colors. :th

These 2 are my best bets for males, but I'm not 100% sure. Normally, their combs would be this size by 2 weeks & doubled by 5 weeks.
BLUE

LIGHT BLUE

Pic below shows blue on back left & light blue right/front

My best guesses for females:
WHITE (NO MARK)
*This is Jewel's baby = a possible blue orp sport or lav orp. Chick looked white at hatch but is looking lavender now. Pretty sure it's female, though.

PINK

GREEN

Completely confused on the genders of these last two:
Part of it could be because they were hyper when photographed so they look flushed.

PURPLE

BLACK

Some random group shots:
You have too many cockerels! What happened!

At 5 weeks old there should not be pink wattles so it looks like purple and black are cockerels.

Any crowing yet?

No crowing. LOL

Could the colder weather slow down their sexual maturity? I normally do not hatch in fall. It's strange for me to see such tiny combs in 5 wk olds. That's why I'm so unsure of gender.

Here are some summer pics of what my males usually look like by 5-6 weeks. Most of the time, it's very easy to guess.

Some females for contrast. They sometimes have pink combs & waddles (especially the lighter lav orps) but much smaller.

Here are some males at only 3 weeks. Mine tend to feather in quickly no matter the gender, but taller combs are the 1st sign of males.

Aside from being fully feathered, I think my current 5-wk-olds (from my above post # 78728) have tiny combs like my past 3 week olds.

Too funny---really!

I am sorry, but I have so much style, I really cannot have anymore or I would explode...
Maybe so, but in terms of grammar you could use a lot more of it.
Good morning kw!:frow

I haven't seen anyone for a while. I think everyone must still be in transition between sleep and here. :lau Haven't even seen Bantster yet. She must be sleeping in.
:tongue Or maybe I was up slaving away for hours.

my hens have over a dozen running around now, ughhhh why did I let them hatch, how does one take pics to advertise them for sale! they are wild things with a momma hen!! We have tons of serama eggs because I hate boiling and cleaning them.

ok NOW I am going to bed!
:lau Those who tiny wild babies! And their crazy mommas.
Goodnight.. wait good morning!

Another fish addict! Hooray! :highfive: Do you just do Salt? Your Koran is gorgeous! It's a Pomacanthus semicirculatus right? I love the babies best! :love
Glad to hear your son is going down a better path now! That must have been a hard road. :thumbsup

OE like old english?!? Don't they lay cream eggs? I am so confused! :barnie:lol: And you're saying no eggs to sell for the marans eh? :thWell that's a bummer! I will have to keep looking. :fl I got all excited when you told me your beautiful black chicken was a french maran! My bff likes black chickens (black astros are her fav, she had one she called Betty the ItchB that was like a dog! :lau Made my ears burn!) Well if something suddenly changes pm me!

OE meaning Olive Eggers, AMS that were under FBCM. HENS ARE BLUE, So the eggs will get much darker Olive Green in the next generation under this FBCM Roo I have.

These eggs SHOWN BELOW are from my other two French black marans hens, see how the color is all over the place and splattered right now? This I am not sure if normal or what! @ronott1 @ChickenCanoe @daxigait so I am wondering if I should sell off these hens or what! image is weird, those eggs in the back are a green color not tan and the brown color is off too??? strange image!
