EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hi Benny!!! Good morning everyone!!!

I'm alive and well!! I'm at least 50 miles from all the mudslides going on out here. You get 5 inches of rain in a couple of hours on burned hillsides and it doesn't work out that well. How is everyone handling the deep freezes around the country? Snow in FL?

On the hatching front.....I had JUST gotten rid of all but 1 rooster (who still needs to go), and I had taken a break from hatching. But orrpeople sent me some eggs from the birds I had shipped up to her. I hatched most of them in the incubator, but gave all the chicks to my broody Frilkie. She only successfully hatched 1. The 2 zipping ones she kicked out from under her, I helped hatch. The rest hatched inside. 12 chicks total. I will continue to HATCH inside, but I don't think I will EVER brood inside again. Broody hen brooding is AWESOME!!!
Thanks for the update!

Glad you’re ok from the slides.
We’re they the Silveruud chickens I have some of hers in lockdown.
Yes, she sent me Silverudds and 55 Flowery. I had 6 of 9 Silverudd's hatch, 2 splash 4 blues, and 6 of 6 55s, and they are 4 girls and 2 boys I think. 20180109_080624.jpg 20180109_080724.jpg

Good luck with your hatch!

Awesome thanks. Should know Saturday. 9 of 12 made it to lockdown.

I locked down 12, and had 12 hatch, so you should be in good shape!!! I pulled 2 clears and one early death. I even had my incubator crash around day 13. My Brinsea cradle clutch broke, which causes the incubator to tip upside down, dumping all the eggs. I had been away for 2 days and saw the incubator cracked open, upside down and had no idea how long it was like that. I reset all the eggs, fixed the cradle (I have spare parts) and that is when I pulled the 2 clears. The fake egg thermometer I had showed they lost about 2 degrees. Putting them back together 1 egg was really cold, the rest were all still warm. I think the cold egg is probably the dead one I pulled at lock down. I figured at the least, my hatch would be delayed. It wasn't, I had 1 hatch day 20, 10 hatch day 21 and 1 date day 22. I hope you get both splash and blue!!!

I am back!

Wow tough little critters. Splash and blue would be great. How are they for laying eggs, or have you had older hens of this breed?

I get light to medium green eggs from the 2 that I have. Their first eggs were olive green, but they have lightened up. Their eggs are medium size. I don't collect eggs, so I'm not sure how prolific they are. They are in one of my covered pens, because they are a little on the smaller size.

orrpeople hatched Silverudds the same time I did last year. She got blue and black, but no splash. I got lots of roosters. 7 chicks that lived, 3 blue boys, 1 splash boy, 2 splash hens and 1 black hen. I sent the Splash roo and 1 splash hen up to her. She sent me their offspring. I"m hoping to get a blue hen out of these chicks....
