EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

:oldAlways, when using bleach to sanitize your incubators, let them dry outdoors..
I was on a thread yesterday where we all thought the incubator was contaminated with mold or bacteria. Today the OP posted a picture of the walls in the room used for incubation...covered with black mold!

Person was about to cull his flock and start with new chickens.

 Is that person alright healthwise??

I wonder! Breathing in those spores can be very bad for a lot of people.

I spent a lot of time on the thread with tips on cleaning the incubator and even replacing the bottom of the styro bator but I am not qualified at all with giving black mold cleanup advice...other than to get an expert in there to verify it and figure out the source.

Usually mold that comes out of a wall has a bad case of it in the walls and a water leak too.

Uggh!

I would concur with your thoughts, Ron. We had a wall in our bathroom where it was leaking behind and mold showed up through the wall. I believe if the wall is subject to extremely wet conditions, it can mold like that on the front. When we had a flood in the basement, the unfinished gyproc began to show black mold before we extracted all of it. It's a very unhealthy situation to be exposed to.

From the flooding we were exposed to in 2014, the government people being sent out to give information did explain that bleach is not effective on mold. There are only specific cleaners that can effectively clean mold.

However, from the severity of the specific case you posted about, it sounds like it may need to be dealt with at a construction/restoration level. I believe I'd let experts deal with that.

We once had a massive rain flood in our house due a plogde (?) drainage tube. And we had mold in one of our walls. THE only thing that wiped it out (and I have tried almost everything !) Was a propane torch that burned it inside the wall, then a quick plaster fix and new paint and we didn't see it again.

I'm in the middle of replacing a few pieces of drywall showing black stains from successive flooding in the basement over the years when the sump pump died.

You fought the mold and YOU won!

I have to make specific note that I was not referring to your comment about bleach when I referenced Ron's thread. I just realized appearance of connection. That was not my intention. I believe bleach is also a very acceptable medium to use on incubators. I find the smell to be a bit much, but that's probably from my years of bleaching farrowing rooms.

I always thought bleach killed and cleaned mold up until they informed us differently. :idunno Bad mold!!
