EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

He's doing well. Gained 3lbs his first month of life!

My great pyr is on the left. Her BF is on the right LOL
If it was successful, I suspect a mother day present from her ;)

he's a huge hit with my girls... the boys are slightly more indifferent LOL

I finally got my husband to let me remodel the kitchen, so that's been a work in progress. I'm just over 6 weeks out, but I got a hernia at the end of my pregnancy, and basically have to wear a belly band until I'm done having children and can get surgery to fix it.

(okay, done picture spamming now!)

My husband will, I have too many kids to wrangle to feel comfortable having a loaded gun on me. I'm too easily distracted right now lol
congratulations on your son I'm glad he was born healthy and is doing well and that you are well.

I've been so busy guys!!! We've got a bunch of hatches coming along, and I had to file a police report after "nicely" trying to ask my neighbor to keep their dogs from killing off my chickens. They've gotten at least 6-7 I can prove, and probably between 15-20 total.
Today was the final straw, after killing the first hen my daughter really bonded too, they finally got her favorite chicken, a white cochin who was the mother to the rest of our cochin(s). I had 2 eggs left from her so I put them both in the incubator.... I'm not thrilled by her loss, as white fluff was an all time favorite of all the kids :(

Our rhode island red Tiny, was funny, but she wasn't as "friendly" to anyone but my daughter. Of course, the blasted dogs also wouldn't pick off our roosters, just our laying hens. So annoying! (Well, not true, they probably rid us of at least half the roosters I was planning on butchering this spring, but they focused mostly on my hens.)

I waited until I had concrete proof (saw the dog EATING my chicken in their front yard as I drove by.) confronted them while her feathers were coating both the front and back yard where he couldn't deny the evidence.

They promised to keep their dogs confined, then a couple days later, they strike again and a rooster and 2 hens are gone and the feathers are all over my horse field and their front yard.

Very unhappy about this. I had to file a police report and was basically told to just shoot the dogs. Unfortunately, by the time we get out there, they've already struck and ran off our property with the bird. (Or, we don't have a loaded gun handy.)

He told me he forgets to feed his dogs sometimes, or runs out of food because when she has puppies, he can't afford to "feed all of the dogs" basically....... which is also why they don't have a fenced yard, or dog kennels, and our laws here for tying dogs is 3 hours or less and then they have to be inside... and they don't allow dogs inside their house.

Animal control offered to take the puppies and any other dogs they didn't want, but they said they wanted to keep them, after telling me the 2 dogs they couldn't even touch who act like a feral pack, they could care less. So we have at least 2 unfixed females, and 2 unfixed males, who keep having puppies. (or, their puppies will start soon) and these dogs are choosing to be anti-people, which makes them very dangerous in a pack mentality.

They've acted aggressively with us before, and Ig ot lucky one of my dogs jumped our fence and stomped the dogs face into the ground to protect our family and it happened in front of our house. Not down the road by their house. It was literally in front of our house. They have no fear that way.
My ole man would not hesitate to put down any neighbor's k-9 that came onto our property. We have our local Animal Control's & S.O.'s blessing.

I'm sorry to hear these kind of stories. Also sorry for your losses.

My husband and I dislike shooting dogs. I've put down my own dog before for killing livestock, so I don't have a problem doing it when it's required. I wish they'd either contain their dogs, get rid of them... or... something that doesn't involve us having to lure the dog's close enough to shoot when we have a gun handy. Our problem is they are off our property by the time we get the gun out.

Animal control would have removed them from the owners if you lived here. Also they loan out large traps here. Big as hog traps. Grocery store chicken in the trap, make a phone call, and one less feral/free range neighborhood menace is on the loose.
Sad part about it. Feeding whole chickens to dogs is dangerous. They can choke on the tiny bones. Too bad that didn't happen.

i agree. I've been told as soon as I see them loose in the road, to call animal control and they'll pick them up. They have to be in the road, as they cannot chase the dog onto the owners property.

I wish I knew. It would end up being cheaper to fix their dogs, then feed puppies non-stop. I have 7ish dogs and just bred my great pyr, i know how much a litter of puppies and full size dogs cost. Having your neighbors chickens be their food (pretty sure they killed one of my barn cats, too.) when will it stop if I run out of chickens? Will they go after my goats next?

It's just a horrible situation. Doesn't sound like there is any chance to get them to pay for the chickens the dogs killed so far.
